State Rural Youth Sets 1949 Work Plan and Officers
Nebraska Rural Youth met for a first 1949 planning session approving a busy program. Plans include a Curtis Agricultural College camp August 12 14 the Seventh Midwest Conference at the University of Nebraska March 31 April 2 and a Western Regional Conference of Rural Youth USA. Rex Geiger York is president Esther Schwartzkopf vice president Dorothy Maclean secretary Verlin Livingston treasurer with a sponsoring board and agents from Dawson Otoe and Cheyenne counties among others attended. Mr. Davis highlighted youth outreach and noted only six percent of western states have a Rural Youth director. He projected Rural Youth extension work for ages 18 to 30 as a major future focus and announced 14 Nebraska counties have organized groups since last year. The group discussed speakers for Curtis and prepared for the Nebraska Invitational Western Regional conference May 20 22.

Dream of two Cheyenne County Rural Youth members is turning into a concrete program as Nebraska State Rural Youth approves plans for the first Nebraska Invitation Western Regional Conference of Rural Youth to be held in Curtis Nebraska from Friday through Sunday in May 2022. Verlin Livingst on and Rennie Andersen led the effort with national officers backing a western regional meeting to draw rural youth from states west of the Mississippi. More than 75 letters were sent to leaders and groups with Miss Dorothy MacLean coordinating. The goal is five delegates one adult leader and four youth from each state seeking wide attendance and regional involvement.

Infant Joseph Stibley Jr Dies and Burial Held
Final rites were performed Friday for Joseph Stibley Jr., infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph B. Stibley of the Sioux Ordnance Depot. He died shortly after birth. Burial followed at Greenwood Cemetery. Survivors include the parents and two other children. Craig Mortuary arranged the services.

Gurley Boy Dies In Tractor Accident
Six year old Philip Cunningham son of Mr and Mrs Berton Cunningham was killed in a tractor hydraulic lift mishap at the Cunningham farm east of Gurley. The tragedy occurred about two in the afternoon while he and his sister Janice aged four played in the yard. Funeral services were held at two o clock in the Gurley Methodist Church with Rev Walter Jewett, burial in Greenwood Cemetery Sid ney. Phillip born July 18 1942 in Omaha was a Gurley school student. Survived by his parents and one sister.

The region saw a late spring chill with no new Cheyenne County snow by midafternoon. Most of the state stayed below average temperatures while eastern areas expected snow and colder weather. By Monday 3 p.m. Sidney reported 50 degrees and a freeze not forecast for the night. Wheat is greening across the county as growers note light losses from January icing, supported by the state crop improvement association survey.

Sidney Airport to gain facilities and two runways
The Civil Aeronautics Administration plans substantial improvements at Sidney Municipal Airport this year. A new watch building 22 by 44 feet will be constructed, two graded runways laid out with drainage work, and a gravelled administration and parking area fenced. The intermediate field will move west of town after June 30, with completion likely by December 30, under a CAA State contract. Groundwork includes leased land, shared water supply, and REA power lines. Runways will be hard packed and seeded to prevent erosion. lighting may be added though not in current plans.

Truck Weight Limits Enforced on Local Highways
High way Safety Patrolmen Mel Busekist and G E Miller conducted a weeklong check of commercial and farm trucks. A weather weakened roads rule allows lighter roads, setting a 12000 pound gross per axle limit on Highway 29 from Kimball area to Gering and Highway 26 Bridgeport to Ogallala. Two Buildings Condemned in Sidney Fire Marshal Ruling
Fire Marshal E C Iverson won condemnation of two Hickory street buildings overlooking the Union Pacific tracks. Keedick and Killham properties, each about 75 years old, are ordered vacated and torn down with cleanup within 60 days, due to dilapidation and fire risk. Lucille Rathman, a 4-H standout from near Dalton, is named recipient of the Union Pacific railroad company scholarship to the College of Agriculture in Lincoln. The $100 grant covers college expenses and includes free transportation to Lincoln and back.
