Seedlings and Transplants Must Be Kept Moist Until Planting
University of Nebraska forester Karl Loerch warns farmers seedlings and transplants delivered for spring planting must stay moist from nursery to planting. Roots dry out quickly and dies, so water immediately on arrival and plant soon. If stored longer than a few days, heel in the trees in moist soil and keep roots shaded and damp to prevent exposure to sun or wind.
