In Sidney the Union Pacific has operated only diesel and gas turbine powered trains for over a month. A lone 800 class steam engine remains as emergency power and is run to keep pistons clean. Steam locomotives will return this summer during peak freight activity, but long term the era of steam on the line appears near completion.
