A push to bar new interstate construction west of Lincoln and cap the state gasoline tax is under discussion. Backers aim to place a constitutional amendment or initiative on the 1958 ballot, requiring 50 000 signatures to qualify. The plan targets funding to improve existing roads only, while the Omaha to Lincoln segment would still proceed due to federal law.
Nebraska's Cheyenne County stubble mulching demonstration near Sidney drew about 800 people from 15 counties and five states. The event showcased 18 sub tillage machines and five grain drills, plus a stubble healer, and underscored summer fallowing benefits. Federal cost sharing applications for stubble mulching cover 32,500 acres with a deadline of April 1.

Lois Munderloh has purchased the Star Dust Hobby Shop from Walter Belz and will move it next to Rudy's in the former Bob's Bakery. The store will expand its stock and plans a grand opening in about a month.
Nebraska Attorney General C S Beck ruled that districts not operating schools are ineligible for state funds. In Cheyenne County five districts contract education with others and face reduced or withheld apportionment totaling about two million dollars pending further guidance.
Internationally famous Lee Grabel brings his stage revue to the Junior Big Auditorium Friday sponsored by the Sidney Kiwanis Club. The mystery review features Helens as Grabel’s assistant with feats like a cannon shooting illusion and objects appearing. Two shows with a 3:30 pm matinee and 8 pm evening, proceeds fund local youth activities.
Flora Sanis of the water and sanitation department reports stable water levels in Sidney’s six municipal wells with pressure as good as two years ago. In January and February the city pumped 47.37 million gallons, down slightly from 50.66 million a year earlier, despite peak historical use in 1955 and 1956. Capacity totals 9.432 million gallons daily across six wells. Individual well capacities are 1050, 1050, 1250, 900, 1100 and 1200 gallons per minute.
The 1957 Miss Ft Sidney pageant will be held May 17 at the senior high auditorium. Entrants must be 18 by September and 28 or under, with a scholarship and trophy awarded to the winner who will advance to Lincoln for the state pageant. Previous winners include Betty Ann Ringleman and Charlene Anthony.
Funeral services were held at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Alliance for Jean Andre Ditsch 57 who died Monday morning in St Josephs Hospital Alliance He was born April 5 1899 in New York City and lived near Gurley before farming and ranching near Alliance Survivors include his wife Agnes five children one sister and two brothers in the area

Eastern Nebraska reports heavier rain while central areas seek 12 inches of ground moisture. officials call the weekend moisture a hopeful start for timely spring rain. Subsoil levels require sustained moisture to normalize, with no highways blocked by drifting snow.
Shell Oil Co via its Denver office plans a deep test two miles northwest of Kimball in the center of section 26 15 56. The Schneider B No. 1 will target the pre Cambrian granite at an estimated depth of 8 900 feet, with Kindall Drilling Co to perform the work. Ohio Oil Co. continues a nearby Mary Egging No 1 test at about 4 535 feet as Baumgartner Oil Co. probes Taylor No 1.
Nebraska crude oil output rose to 52 155 barrels per day last week, surpassing the prior weekly record of 51 239 barrels per day set the week before. The gain of nearly 1 000 barrels per day extends the state’s record production level.
West of Gurley oil shows in a 33 foot core from Taylor No 1 SE NW 34-16-50 with depth 4.88 feet. Sage Oil Co moves into J sand of Durland Trust No 1 NW NW 13-16-51 after a D sand core shows no oil. Depth today 4899 feet. Plains Exploration plugged Garden County’s Peterson No 1 yesterday. Shell granite test at Julesburg Basin to be watched by oil men.
Funeral services are set for Eleanor Kalthoff and Violet Farmer who died in a two car crash near Brady while returning from the state women's bowling tournament. Kalthoff's service is Thursday at St Patrick's Church with burial in Greenwood. Farmer's service is Friday at Light Memorial Presbyterian Church. The Gehrig and Son Funeral Home handles arrangements with memorials to St Patrick's Church. Survivors include multiple children, grandchildren, and relatives from Sidney.
Funeral services were held at Wheatland Wye this afternoon for Chester Vo Bullock Sr the father of Mrs Don Devi im and of Daltua Mao Bullock died Sunday.
