Oil Exploratory Boom Expected in 1959 Basin Wide

Industry observers forecast a brisk 1959 in the Denver-Julesburg Basin as many leases expire and drilling costs stay low. Activity centers on Kimball Banner Nebraska and Weld Morgan counties, with rushes east of the basin and a push to test untested leases before year end. Domestic oil supply could rise to meet military demand if overseas sources dwindle.

Big oil output in Cheyenne County over decade

Cheyenne County has produced nearly 30 million barrels of oil since the May 1949 discovery east of Gurley, with gross value around 85 to 90 million dollars. Royalty and landowners share about 10 million, while gas production and secondary recovery plans shape future output and field lifespans.

Sidney High School to Stage Down In The Valley Friday

Final rehearsals are underway for the Sidney High School Chorus operetta Down In The Valley to be presented Friday at 8 p.m. in the senior high auditorium. Director William Fankhauser with assistant George Hinn and Miss Lois Watson leads. Admission 75 cents adults 50 cents students 25 cents children. Tickets from chorus members or at door. Cast includes Brack Weaver Jennie Parsons Lynn Nelson Thomas Bouche Peery Mise gadis and others with Phil Fleming as dance caller. Connie Madsen designed program cover. Fire Damage at Hardy Apartments Causes Minor Loss

Firemen responded to a silent alarm at the Hardy Apartments when an iron plugged in caused minor damage. Miss Winnie Ashley said she left for work forgetting the iron. Damage to the ironing board and pads was estimated at about 15 dollars.

Gurley Names Rosen as Next Superintendent of Schools

GURLEY M. M. Rosen will become the superintendent of schools here next fall, succeeding Lawrence R. Hilty, who resigned. Rosen currently serves as superintendent at Melbeta, entering his third year there after teaching in eastern Nebraska and Colorado. Hilty plans to remain in school administration with undetermined specifics.

Harte Faces Surgery At Bluffs Hospital

William D. Harte secretary treasurer of The Sidney Kimball Farm Loan Assn entered Western Nebraska Methodist Hospital in Scottsbluff Sunday and was to undergo surgery this morning. Mrs Harte accompanied him and remained there temporarily.

Annual LPY Festival Sees 200 Students Compete Thursday

St Patrick's Academy hosts the annual Lodz2 Pole Valley Activities Assn music festival with about 200 students from 11 towns arriving Thursday. Judging begins at 8 30 am for instrumental solos and groups, with choruses judged around 1 pm at the Youth Center. Participating schools include St Patrick's Lorenzo Lodgepit Big Sings Gurley Oakton Mazeta Farrisburg Sunflower Potter and Dix aidedges. George Hinn and William TFonkauser of Sidney Public Schools serve as judges.

New Upholstery Firms Open in Sidney with Pieces and Service

Two new business evenings announced for a furniture operation by Jack and Clin Coucvlees at VFW Build, offering custom-built furniture, upholstery, and reupholstering in fabrics. Co-owners Sidney natives bring upholstery experience. Also opened is Ron's Par tase at 1349 Illinois, led by Ben Tighe and Gene Higgins, expanding local services.

The 1959 Potter Days will be held September 18 and 19. The committee appointments are not yet made and will be announced later.

Lodgepole Banker Named Honorary Colonel for 1959 Fort Sidney Days

A C. Andy Peterson, 59 year old Lodgepole bank president, was chosen Tuesday as Honorary Colonel of the 1959 Fort Sidney Days. He will crown the 1959 Miss Fort Sidney on April 24. Peterson, lifelong area resident and banker since sweeping floors, has led First State Bank of Lodgepole to decades at the helm. He has served as village official and bank association leader, with family ties in Phoenix and Lodgepole banking. He and his wife are due back from Arizona in about two weeks.

Jaycees narrow five civic project contenders for 1959

Sidney Jaycees committee led by Jack Simmons selects five top proposed projects from about 125 ideas for the Number One Project of 1959. The list includes a heated swimming pool with glass sides, improved Legion Park picnic facilities, a Library Expansion Fund, an Industrial Fund to attract industries, and a steel stadium with dressing rooms and restrooms. Final choice to be made at the next meeting, with potential additions if a better option appears.

Country Club Names New Managers

Mr and Mrs James Zander of Hot Springs Ark named managers at Sidney Country Club. They ran The Turf Club in Hot Springs for four years and expect to open the clubhouse by Easter or sooner. Mr Zander formerly led Denver Officers Club 1949 to 1952 and was assistant at Lakewood Country Club 1952 to 1954. Their Turf Club business continues. The clubhouse has been closed since February. Officials aim to reopen soon with a spring season and a campaign to finance a swimming pool, with membership hoped to grow once pool service begins.
