Alliance voters are expected to cast ballots Tuesday for four City Council seats in the general election. Six primary candidates compete, while School Board and police magistrate candidates are not on the primary ballot but will appear in the general election on April 7.

Governor Ralph G. Brooks led the Easter Seal campaign urging Nebraskans to raise $100,000 beyond prior goals to fund new rehabilitation centers. Timmy Austin, the 1959 Easter Seal Child, highlighted the need for services to help cerebral palsy victims gain independence. Brooks stressed broad outreach to ensure all Timmy-like children receive care and noted adult rehabilitation centers save tax dollars by restoring ability to work.
Sidney police logged five weekend traffic mishaps, mainly due to icy streets. Incidents included an intersection collision at 8th and Jackson involving Jerome Kleeman and Sam Irwin, with modest damages. an accident at 15th and Maple injuring no one, and two other fender benders on 10th Ave near Linden Street and at 13th Ave underpass. A final crash at 13th and Jackson amid a snowstorm involved Robert Rigel and John Hall with visible damage. None reported serious injuries.
Norman Foote of Sidney suffered second degree burns to his left hand head and face in an oil rig mishap near Kimball Monday morning. Foote and coworker Richard Hunt were burned when butane gas ignited. Foote received first aid from a Kimball doctor and was taken to Sidney Memorial Hospital where he was reported in good condition.
Oil field activity expands in Cheyenne County with Lippstrew No 1 wildcat eight miles east of Gurley where Zoller Lananeberg and TWH Drilling plan a test. Nearby development and thirteen new drill notices across Nebraska indicate rising exploration, with Kissinger and other operators targeting Kimball Banner Morrill and Hitchcock counties.
A Nebraska holder publishes a 1947 Cork Ireland letter to a Canadian cousin. It greets the recipient, notes money sends, seven masses for grandparents, and references a priest, local figures, and a lynch of a police killer. Work has started on the rest home addition to Memorial Hospital. Carl Christ Construction Co. of Sidney has the general contract. If on schedule, the wing should be ready for occupancy around December 1. Total cost of construction and furnishings will run just under 3.9 million.
A portable compressor unit owned by Ohio Oil Co on the Krueger Lease in Sidney Draw, southwest of Sidney, performed through a snowstorm that dumped five inches. The test shows the machine functioning well in 10 above zero with winds to 40 mph. Inspectors included George P Elwood of Denver, Tom Perrotti from Corry, Penn, and George Richards of National Supply in Sidney. The unit, normally housed, was left open for the test to run.
A brief snow storm reached near blizzard strength in the Nebraska Panhandle Saturday bringing five inches of snow and up to a half inch of moisture at Sidney airport. Chains were required on highways as visibility dropped to zero and drifts blocked country roads. The storm spread to Wyoming and Colorado, delaying a state basketball tournament in Lincoln and grounding Frontier Air Line flights. Farmers saw the wet snow as beneficial for top soil while trucks and heavy equipment cleared drifts to reach town.
Safety Patrol reports at least six weekend accidents due to icy roads from a storm. State Trooper E J Kotschwar investigated two Sunday within two hours near Sidney on State 19. Ralph A Wiggins 18 lost control north of Sidney. car ditched and overturned, driven home after assistance. Norman Webb 23 of Sterling also overturned. uninjured. A two car collision on US Highway 30 west of Sidney injures none. damage about $200 each.
A pre spring batting average near zero followed a large miss last weekend. The weather man forecasts five days of mild weather with only minor changes. Temperatures around five degrees above normal in Sidney through Saturday. Light snow possible late in the week. Scores Tuesday: 45 to 55.
Two greyhound racing dogs valued at $1,000 each were reported stolen or stray from a station wagon in Sidney around 11 30 pm Sunday. Walter Adams of Ovid Colorado told police he found the dogs missing when he returned from a restaurant. A third dog remained in the vehicle parked at 9th and Illinois. Police suspect the dogs slipped out the back of the wagon. One dog was black and the other tan and grey.
Safety Patrol in Sidney reports worse highway conditions on Monday with drifting snow and icy patches across the Panhandle. Ice on U S 30 east of Sidney and State 19 both directions caused slipperiness, easing later as sun melted ice. West of Sidney U S 30 remained good in Cheyenne County while Kimball County reported patches of ice.
