Cause for Loss of Spring Pigs

The Nebraska Experiment Station cites overfeeding brood sows as a main cause of spring pig losses. Heavy corn rations make sows lazy and inactive, reducing exercise. Limit rations to keep appetite active, place feeding floors away from sleeping quarters, and provide constant access to good alfalfa. Suggested rations include seven parts corn or ground barley with one part oil meal, or nine parts corn and barley to one part tankage, fed in limited amounts.

Oats to Grow Varieties Tested at Nebraska Station

Twenty oat varieties were tested at the Nebraska Experiment Station. Early varieties yielded about 53.9 bushels per acre on average, ripening July 11, while later varieties produced around 40.1 bushels, with Lincoln among the best late performers. Kherson Burt and Texas Red stood out early, and with Kherson, eight pecks per acre is ideal when drilled, ten pecks when broadcast, as larger grains need higher rates.
