The Sidney Telegraph reports a newsprint shortage will curtail Monday and Friday editions from ten or twelve pages to eight pages. Publishers seek additional supplies, as current stock lasts until mid May or June, with August delivery uncertain.
Frank Juarez 22 of Ordville was fined 50 dollars and costs and had a three month license suspensi on and ten days in jail after a lour vehicle collision on Jackson Street. He and passenger Frank Cruz were injured and taken to Memorial Hospital where Juarez later escaped through a hospital window. Cruz reportedly carried 1330 dollars in cash and claimed he won it.
Sidney city council faces a dispute over where city power ends and Wheatbelt REA power begins. Wheatbelt seeks to serve customers now within Sidney limits as growth threatens overlapping service. Conflicts are emerging with new housing on the southern fringe, prompting an imminent decision.
Brighter lighting is planned for Sidney's business district as city officials order new mercury vapor lamps to replace aging fixtures. Part of Old Jackson Street has been lit with the newer lamps, and poles were moved to the Grabill Park Addition. The school land addition may be the next housing area to receive illumination.
The 1954 census prelim report by the Bureau of the Census lists Cheyenne County service establishments at about $1,506,000 in receipts. Payroll totaled $219,000 with $188,000 paid in Sidney. 105 employees, 84 fulltime, and 114 active proprietors. Personal services earned $411,000 from 39 firms. auto services $123,000 from nine firms. all other services $972,000 from 62 firms.
Neal Craig terminated her association today with The Telegraph's news department. She had been affiliated with the paper for several years. Balance of structural steel for the Sidney Municipal Power Plant work was dispatched from Des Moines. City Manager Murrey Fuller said steel arrivals will finish shipments and allow bracing of the east side roof columns and basement work for a new 4 800 kilowatt engine to be shipped from Milwaukee within a month with an expected May 1 installation aim. East of Sidney, at the sewage disposal plant, equipment has begun arriving for expansion.
Two Sidney men, Bill Loyd aged 25 and Eldon Gilreath 24, were cut and bruised in a noon wreck at the northside intersection of 12th Ave and Elm St. Damages exceed 400 dollars. Both declined hospitalization.
Delbert C. Nicholson 33 of Chappell sought by Cheyenne County authorities over a $10 no fund check. He is charged with writing two no fund checks and is in Box Butte County custody. Nicholson was arraigned in Alliance last October but failed to appear for trial. He was arrested last week in Kemmerer Wyoming and returned to Alliance for trial.
Sidney firemen quickly stopped a freak wreck at the Porter Oil Co. service station on 13th Ave and Illinois St. A 1937 Heaton and Peetz salvage truck, being moved to a junk yard, ran loose and struck a gas pump, igniting gasoline but causing no injuries. Fire crews extinguished the flames within six minutes, preventing further damage to nearby pumps and the storage tank.
Snow and sub zero temperatures grip Cheyenne County over the weekend with about an inch of snow in the area and a low of seven below zero at Sidney airport. The cold snap is breaking and a warming trend is forecast with highs near freezing and rising to 35 to 40 by tomorrow. Six traffic crashes in Sidney caused by slick streets resulted in about $1,000 in damage.
State Highway Department and Sidney engineers tell property owners along 13th Ave they will not face condemnation actions before attempting an out of court settlement. Officials cite recent court outcomes and note delays in approving the negotiator’s appointment. City council reassures neighbors that no suits will proceed until out of court agreements are sought.
Frost law restrictions go into effect Wednesday on two Panhandle highways. Overweight permits are barred on bituminous surfaces except for short distances when no alternative routes exist. Affected routes include US 26 from Broadwater area to Lewellen city limits, and Nebraska 61 from Ogallala to Grant city limits.
Cheyenne County sheriff's office investigates a loss of about $40 from a steel box in a filing cabinet inside the Dalton High School office. Superintendent Edward Townley confirmed the amount and location of the theft occurred late last month.
State geologist figures show Cheyenne County oil production last year generating about 8.88 million dollars at a well price of 2.83 per barrel from 3,130,605 barrels. Combined with small prolific pools and ten leading fields since 1949, output likely exceeds 30 million dollars not including natural gas. Increased wildcatting could follow 1956 leasing and potential Congressional action.
Ohio Oil Co reports Uptegrove C No 3 as the western limit of the Spearow Field southeast of Gurley. Depth 4 642 feet. two drill stem tests yielded only salt water. Spearow No 5 finished at 65 barrels per day with no water. New locations include Rudolph No 2 and Shell Oil wildcats in Banner, Kimball, Morrill counties and more across the area.
First municipal primary since 1950 opens at 8 a.m. with seven names on the ballot for Sidney city council. Top four advance to April 3 general election to fill two council seats. Polling places are East Ward, North Ward, South Ward and Central Ward schools. 2,800 ballots ordered amid hopes of a record turnout.
Dr W O Brown of West Nebraska General Hospital announces full approval by the Council on Medical Education of the AMA for the Medical Technology program run with Chadron State Teachers College. The four year plan will grant an AB degree in Medical Technology, first awarded to Betty Jean Turvey this May after three years at Chadron State and a fourth year at the hospital.
Nebraska Safety Patrol will double the number of cruising units in the Sidney area on April 1. Trooper Bob Cook, added last October, will complete his six month probation and be issued his own patrol car. The move follows Cook being placed with the force earlier that fall.
