Oil News: Three New Nebraska Wells Reported

Banner County dominates the oil scene with three new wells. A discovery near the Nebraska Wyoming line at No 1 Young reports 460 feet of oil in a drill stem test. Wells include No 1 Mary Dewis in Llano Field with 11 feet oil show in J sand. Pan American No 15 Edwards Unit shows four feet oil in core test. Sam Gary Denver independent logs No 1St ear ly in Scotts Bluff County with J sand shows. The Cedar Valley area wildcat lies a mile west and could prove important if shows pan out.

Funeral rites for Berniece Catherine Kelly 67 will be Thursday at 9 30 a m at St Patrick’s Catholic Church with Very Rev Vincent Pelster officiating Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery Gehrig and Son Funeral Home in charge Rosary is tonight at 7 30 at the funeral home Miss Kelly a Cheyenne County native born March 31 1896 was daughter of Daniel and Julia Kelly There are no survivors She worked for many years at J W Johnson Insurance Agency and stayed with it after its purchase by W P Ackerman She also served years at The American National Bank She was a member of St Patrick’s Catholic Church Catholics Daughters of America and the Kings Daughters.

Fort Sidney Days Queen set for May 9 at Junior High Auditorium

The 1964 Fort Sidney Days Queen pageant is scheduled for Saturday May 9 with an 8 pm contest in the Junior High School Auditorium. Contestants must be 18 by Sept 1 and not over 28, with a 2 pm tea and preliminary judging. The winner goes to Miss Nebraska in Beatrice in June and receives a 250 dollar scholarship.

Firemen Honored At Sidney Testimonial Dinner

A testimonial dinner for Sidney Volunteer Fire Department members and their wives was held at the Fort Sidney Motor Hotel Tuesday night. Mayor Dean Wilson awarded service pins for 5 to 25 years, with W. E. Gehrig Sr. and Red Porter earning 25 years, Jack Hutchison 20 years, Virgil Greever Willis King and Harvey Vizina 15 years, Dan Benzel Charlie Hawkins Bob Hassle Floyd Lanks 10 years, and Merle Bobo Rich Boyer Walt Herboldsheimer Russ Joder Arnold Larson Jim Paxton Henry Schoenholtz Dallas Stettner and Dean Stettner 5 years. An evening magic act entertained attendees.

Car Demolished On Curve Near Greenwood Cemetery

A 1957 model car rolled over on a curve at the northwest corner of Greenwood Cemetery at 4 20 p m Tuesday. Norman L Martin 22 of Sidney drove southbound and into the road bank. He was uninjured while his mother Mildred Bay Sidney sustained minor bruises per Highway Safety Patrol Trooper Felix Koenig.

Lorenzo Public School to renominate superintendent LEO TURNER

LEO TURNER, Lorenzo Public School superintendent, plans to return for another term. A former principal, he also serves as coach and instructor. Faculty must indicate their intentions by April 3. Turner, a native of Elm Creek, graduated from Kearney State Teachers College in 1957 and expects a master's degree from Kearney this summer.

Bulls Sold At Monday Sale 44 at Alliance

Forty four bulls were sold Monday afternoon at the 49th semi annual sale of the Western Nebraska Hereford Association in Alliance. The average price was 740 dollars, with top head selling for 1000 dollars or more and averaging 1995 dollars among the top five. Earl Henderson and Sons of Alliance showed the grand champion bull, which Ralph Riggs of Crawford purchased for 2025 dollars.

Fair Board 64 Plans Cheyenne County Fair Opening Aug 9

The Fair Board set opening plans for 1964 Cheyenne County Fair with a barbecue as the inaugural feature. Wayne Campbell and Fred Kriesel lead barbecue arrangements. The fair runs August 9 to 12 with 1000 to 1500 reserved seats at 50 cents extra. Rodeo Queen contest is led by Art McMillen and Merle Bobo with entries soon.

Cut Imports 50 Percent by Martin Bill in Congress

Congressman Dave Martin proposes a 12 line bill to cut meat imports by 50 percent from 1963 levels covering dressed meats live animals and processed meats. He says 1963 imports of about 1.8 billion pounds would boost cattle prices but President Johnson opposes any reduction. Other efforts to curb meat imports have failed in both chambers.

Scotts Bluff seeks to unite four acres with 36 neighbors for a 46 acre unit, and Cheyenne County involves two oil firms to form a 46 acre spacing. Sioux Army Depot 1963 payroll tops four million dollars

Sioux Army Depot reported a 1963 calendar year payroll of 4,217,000 under Col. Stanley W. Smiley, accounting for 82.6 percent of western Nebraska’s largest permanent industry’s operating costs. Other outlays included 401,000 for transportation, 83,000 for utilities, 115,000 for contracts, and 287,000 for supplies and equipment.

Exodus To Cage Meet Opens With St Patrick Team Departure

The District Class C tournament begins as St Patrick’s Academy players depart Sidney for Lincoln at 7 30 am in three cars led by Coaches Bevan Rolls and Father Murphy. Hearing On Gas Rate At Bluffs

A hearing is set for Thursday at 9:30 a.m. in the Municipal Building on Kansas Nebraska Natural Gas Co. request for a rate increase in Scottsbluff. Testimony will be heard from City and Kansas Nebraska representatives as the council weighs a proposed 49.9 percent revenue rise, with a two day hearing possible.
