Tribute to Cheyenne County 4-H Clubs

Noted Jurist To Be Here March 21st

Judge Philip J. Gilliam of Denver Juvenile Court, hailed as outstanding national juvenile court judge, will be featured speaker at the District Youth Conference in Sidney. The one day event, hosted by the Sidney Youth Council, includes about 150 175 attendees from the Panhandle and beyond with lodging provided for those traveling over 100 miles.

Judge Gilliam Leader in Juvenile Delinquency Problems

Denver Judge Piahp B. Gilliam of the Juvenile Court presides over the Probation Department, which handled 2,538 delinquents last year. Since 1940 he has overseen 80,000 juvenile cases and will speak on Saturday March 21 at the District V Youth Conference hosted by Sidney Youth Council.

St Pat’s and Peetz Head to State Basketball Tournaments

St Patrick’s of Peetz and St. Fat’s high schools will represent the region in state tournaments this week. Coach Rollie Bevan’s Irish men earned a berth in the Nebraska Class C tournament in Lincoln for the second year, while Coach Tom Wells’ Bulldogs qualified for the Colorado Class C tournament at Adams City. First games Thursday feature Peetz vs Vilas at 2 45 p.m. MST and St Patrick’s vs Gibbon at 8 45 p.m. CST. St Pat’s carries a 19 5 record into Lincoln, Peetz a 19 1 mark after consecutive district wins, 77 44 over Sedgwick.

Irishmen edge Crawford in regional playoffs at Lodgepole

In Thursday regional playoffs at Lodgepole the Irishmen defeated Crawford 60 to 55. In district play they beat North Platte St. Pat's 60-57 Oshkosh 60-52 and Grant 52-45. The Bulldogs have three straight state trips in 1960 1961 and 1962 and won the 1962 Colorado Class C title 72-55 over Flagler. Peetz won 1961 consolation crown Scribner fell to Gibbon and Atlen edged in final seconds. The Irishmen have 1433 points over 24 games.

Stars of Tomorrow Triangles Shoots to Grand Prize

In the 11th annual Stars of Tomorrow show a girl and two boys from Sidney High School formed a vocal group named Triangle and won Grand Prize in the Kiwanis sponsored event at the Junior High auditorium. Bruce Blanchard Margie Nelson and Bob Jay accepted the prize check from Arlo Jones as 19 acts performed. The trio will advance to a district contest at Casper, Wyoming, with emcee Benny Hochman and Kiwanis members guiding the event.

Potter Farmer Dies At Home In Potter Nebraska

Frank Elof Johnson 82 died Sunday morning at his farm home north of Potter from a heart attack. Services at 2 p.m. Wednesday at First Lutheran Church Potter. Burial Kirk Cemetery. Born November 27 1881 in Telieryk Sweden he lived in Fullerton Neb before moving to Potter in 1959. Survivors include two sisters Miss Hannah Johnson Mrs Clara Anderson and a brother Joseph Johnson. Red Cross Launches Rural Drive in Cheyenne County

Red Cross begins a county fund drive with contribution envelopes circulating in Cheyenne County rural areas and outlying towns. A Sidney campaign with United Fund has already raised an estimated $2,000, while rural areas aim for $1,500 to meet the county goal.

Medical Aid Granted for Aged in Cheyenne County

Cheyenne County welfare office reports 107 aged recipients received old age assistance in February under Kerr Mills provisions. Total aid 128,581 with $12,074 for old age, $6,060 for dependent children, $348 for blind old age, and $3,? for disabled. Averages ranged from $87 to $132. higher totals driven by medical expenses and state-law increases.

Frontier Airlines posted a 34 percent rise in February boardings from 1963 and an 80 percent gain over February two years earlier with 45,000 passengers, establishing a 17 year record for the carrier.

Solid Confidence In Future Of Livestock Industry Seen At Sale Held Here Saturday

The Sidney Livestock Sales Pavilion reported strong buyer interest and rising prices at both regular and special sales. Bulls fetched 300 to 400 dollars, Hereford and Angus cattle sold well, with 22 bulls and 50 females sold. Regular sale results included 600-lb steers at 23.95 and 365-lb steers at 24.60, as managers expect 800 head for the March 14 sale.

2 Car Crash Fatal To Robert Lewis

Robert Lewis aged 63, general manager of Collier Community TV Systems, was killed in a Friday afternoon two car collision on Stage Hill south of Gering during a snow squall. LeRoy B. Lewis, 27, of Bayard, was injured with a broken nose while wearing a seat belt.

Patrol Lists 231 Arrests In February

In February the Kimball Cheyenne Deuel District troopers logged 1,920 hours on main highways and 40 on county roads. They assisted 111 motorists, cleared 64 obstructions, and investigated 27 accidents. A total of 231 arrests occurred, including 184 for moving violations, 30 for registration and license violations, and 12 for driving while intoxicated.

A second collision at the same time on the same corner injured Josephine I. Vanan. Gonzales was arraigned for reckless driving. A third Sunday crash at Beverly and Deborah drives involved Noel S. Golden and Floyd E. Ward with modest damages. A Saturday Sky Road collision left Lyle Van Cleave’s car damaged after hitting a parked vehicle.
