Hospital Program Is Rushed
A preliminary application for federal funds to help build the Cheyenne County community hospital will go to the state hospital advisory board today or tomorrow. The board is expected to meet in Lincoln later this week with Sidney listed as top priority. Engineers surveyed the site and will forward metes and bounds to the federal health service. Pledges due February 1 have risen after the site was chosen, and construction may begin next fall. Dr and Mrs Dorwart donated acreage for the site and directors bought more land on McNett’s suggestion.

Two men arrested by Sidney Police on suspicion of smashing into several local cars were bound over to district court on $2,500 bond each. Jack Wheeland, 20, of Hastings, pleaded not guilty. Marvin J. Balard, 33, Burwell, pleaded guilty. They waived preliminary hearing after being identified by William Lowe and found with Miss Violet Shepherds belongings. Arraignment scheduled in district court likely this week.

Judy Tudder a 12 year old Sidney girl is Cheyenne County second polio victim and the second in the state. She was taken to Methodist Hospital in Scottsbluff Sunday by Gehrig ambulance. The doctor believes she has polio with the start of paralysis. The first county victim and first in the state was Terry Dindinger of Potter who died from bulbar polio.

Hans L. Larsen of Rawlins Wyoming filed a 130000 dollar damage suit in Fort Collins Colorado against Richard Powell and his father W D Powell. Larsen says he suffered severe fractures in an automobile crash three miles south of the Wyoming Colorado line on March 6 1951. He seeks 76000 for false settlement inducement plus 100000 for pain suffering and loss of wages and 5668 31 for medical expenses.

Sidney will host the American Legion District Four Oratorical Contest on March 17 with doors opening for a 7 30 p m start at the Sidney High School auditorium. Glen A Erickson of Scottsbluff serves as district chair man and two entrants will be chosen from Sidney. Bob Mahr won the Sidney high school contest last week as St Patrick's Academy prepares the finals to select a winner from six entrants.

Labor Need Under That Of Last Year
The Sidney area February labor demand rose slightly from January but stayed far below year earlier levels due to Sioux Ordnance Depot lows. Of 1,074 visitors, 191 were women and 159 veterans. 102 workers were referred, 14 of them women. 107 workers were placed. The Nebraska State Employment Service will visit all local high schools to offer aptitude tests guiding graduates and those entering military service toward civilian occupations.

Assessment Start Delayed In Cheyenne County March 16
Property assessment in Cheyenne County will not begin before Monday March 16 County Assessor Roy Gish told The Telegraph. The delay stems from a legislature dispute over a fifty per cent assessment law passed with an emergency clause. The State Board of Equalization urged honest equalized taxation and supported limiting tax dollars to 5 per cent increases for 1952 and 1953. The assessment shift follows Gov Crosby signing the bill Friday amid a 33 to 9 vote with a 22 to 15 reconsideration defeat.

Rites Held for Rebecca Baker 76 in Sidney
Funeral services were held Monday at St Patrick s Church for Rebecca Baker 76 a longtime Sidney resident. Interment followed at Sidney cemetery with Gehrig Funeral Home directing. She died Friday in a Sidney hospital after a two month hip fracture and extended hospitalization. Born Rebecca Jane Doran in 1876 at Waddington New York she moved to Sidney at age one, married Nathaniel Baker in 1903 and lived on a Wyoming ranch until 1928. Survivors include son John W Baker and brothers Wallace S Doran and Guy V Doran. Charles E Baker preceded her in death.

Sidney Elks Lodge ceremonies are planned for Sunday May 3 with more than five hundred visitors and Elks dignitaries from Nebraska Colorado and Wyomingexpected. Oil production rises in the Krueger No 4 well six miles west of Sidney with 2,780 feet of clean oil in a drill stem test and No 1 cemented to seal water seepage.
