Air Mail Volume Rises After Frontier Service Starts
Air mail out of Sidney has been heavy since Frontier Airlines began service March 1. Incoming air mail shows no clear rise while passenger business remains satisfactory given weather and other factors. Leo Gorman was sworn in as acting postmaster last Friday and says Brunz began hauling mail Saturday, with a contract expected soon. Gillham resigned February 20 and left for Oregon March 6. Airmail may not have grown much yet as centers learn of direct service to Sidney, which now has four daily flights.

Crop observers grade the Panhandle winter wheat as in excellent condition with ample subsoil moisture and above average precipitation this year. Cheyenne County may lead with five to seven million bushels, totaling an estimated twenty five million bushels across eleven counties. Storage space is expanding, but weather in early weeks post-dormant stage and at harvest remains pivotal for final yields and quality. Nationally, a large crop is expected with export gains for Great Plains hard red winter wheat driving an overall 12 percent rise in exports to about 450 million bushels for 1958-59, aided by 94 million bushels shipped from five-state region valued at $151 million.
