Local store sells major Cheyenne Trading department

Fred S. Stowe, Sidney businessman, bought the dry goods ready to wear and shoe department of the Cheyenne County Trading company. He will run it under his name after leasing the space. The basement area was sold to Herman Brauer for a variety and wallpaper shop. Cheyenne Trading retains grocery hardware and furniture, plus elevator operations led by I. E. Grabill.

Chappell Bachelors Club Prompts Local Uproar Over Derby Hats

In Chappell Nebraska the town’s twenty men formed a bachelors club with by laws forbidding marriage attempts by members. Members are seen on streets in derby hats and face penalties for violations. The club features a noted “crack” orchestra gaining favor in western Nebraska towns. Local girls reportedly vow to interfere as the group plans ventures to Sidney and other nearby towns.

Death of Nine Months Old Max Morgan in Idaho

J Morgan, manager of Skaggs Safeway, returns from Preston Idaho after the death and burial of his nine months old son Max who died on a Union Pacific train February 23 while en route with his parents to a Salt Lake City specialist. The baby fell from a buggy and an injury was believed to affect the spine. Continued on Page Five.

Foreign Service Men to Meet for VFW Post Formation

Sidney and vicinity Foreign Service men will meet at the courthouse at eight to organize a Veterans of Foreign Wars post. Hilliard F. Cameron, Nebraska department chief of staff, says a large post is likely. Features include the poppy factory employing disabled American soldiers and the VFW national home at Bion Rapids Michigan with its family unit system for widows and orphans.

Sidney Motor Sales conducts Fordson tractor school

Emanuel Troutman, head of the mechanical department at Sidney Motor Sales, announces the continued school of instruction. Beginning March 10 at 7:30 p.m. the study of Fordson tractors will be taken up. The class will meet twice monthly on the 10th and 25th.

Sidney rifle club plans dig shoot in April

At a Sidney Nebraska Rifle club meeting on March 3, a committee was named to handle membership and range officers. Aiming to reach sixty members by April 1, the club scheduled a rifle shooting contest for April 24 at their outdoor range near Olson pasture with four target carriers shared from nearby clubs. Events will use 1903 Springfield, Anfield, or Krag rifles with no telescope sights. Teams expected from Potter, Peetz, Kimball, Alliance, Scottsbluff, North Platte, Sterling, and Sidney.

County Commissioners Review Claims At Last Meeting

The county board met last Tuesday in the courthouse to consider and approve or disallow numerous claims. A high volume of bills arrived with many bounty claims this year. Rabbit ear bounties attracted hundreds of entries, coyotes also produced large totals, while mothers pensions and road work dominated the rest. All claims except two were granted.

John McFadden Injured in Fall from Building

Sidney resident John McFadden suffered a fractured hip and multiple bruises after slipping from the roof of a Front Street building owned by his mother while repairs were being made. He was unconscious on arrival of aid, carried home on a stretcher, and treated by Dr. Roche. He is reported as improving as expected.

West bound mailplane forced landing near Potter

A west bound coast to coast airmail flight from Omaha to Cheyenne made a forced landing about a few miles east of Potter Thursday morning due to engine trouble. The plane touched down on rough ground near Lodge Pole creek, the pilot adjusted the motor, and after about an hour was back in the air. Local observers reported damage, later denied by airmail officials. The east bound plane was delayed in Cheyenne until the forced lander arrived.

Oshkosh release ends Boyer murder case inquiry

Frank Boyer is alleged murdered on a sandhill ranch 54 miles northeast of Oshkosh in 1914. Garden county officials Friday released Mrs Frank Boyer and her common law husband Henry Boyer from custody. murder conspiracy charges were withdrawn as evidence made conviction impossible. The pair had confessed to Buffalo county authorities after the bones were disinterred, and Mrs Boyer admitted burning the barn and stock with two brothers. Henry declined to reveal plans. the case drew national attention.

The Fordson tractor clinic and farm school sponsored by Sidney Motor Sales drew about three hundred farmers and business leaders despite bad roads. Attendees viewed motion pictures on seed beds tractor operation and harvest at U S A theatre and toured the Sidney plant with a complimentary lunch. Planned field demonstrations of the Fordson tractor were postponed due to weather with dates to be announced by H P Craig manager.

Miss Mabel Wakefield, former nurse in Gering, seeks 520,000 from Dr C R Watson of Mitchell for breach of promise to marry and damages to health and peace of mind plus 2,000 for time lost and hospital bills from surgical operations. Howard Haynes accepts post at Fort Collins Meyer store

Howard Haynes has left J. B. Byars department store in this city where he served as window decorator and advertising manager to take a new position with the Meyer store at Fort Collins Colorado. He will move his family there soon, and staff and patrons here regret his departure.
