Cattlemen in Nebraska Brace for More Herd Reductions
Nebraska range conditions remain extremely dry despite a recent snow. NSGA area chairmen report arid ranges with open grazing, mild weather, and limited liquidations so far. Some regions see reductions due to drought, market prices, and ongoing cost squeezes, with optimism from a few leaders about feeding on corn stalks and beet tops. Producers worry about how much moisture will arrive this spring as many areas report overgrazing, low hay, and continued stress on native grasses, prompting widespread culling of cows and bred heifers to cut costs and survive drought.
