UAW Strike Impacts Gurley Egging Co in Gurley Nebraska

The UAW walkout at Fiat Allis in Springfield Illinois halts shipments of industrial cabs to Gurley Nebraska. Eighteen Egging Co workers, including three office staff, a draftsman and fourteen production workers, are laid off. Gurley operates without product liability insurance as insurers raised rates from about 27000 to over 100000 this year.

WNTC Ends Classes as Spring Break Starts

Western Nebraska Technical College at Sidney begins spring break this afternoon. No classes Thursday or Friday. offices closed those days. The Western Technical Community College Area meeting is postponed to March 23. Area President Gene Lienemann says higher education budget hearings in the Nebraska Legislature are set for March 16, requiring officials to travel to Lincoln.

Coed dies in car train crash at Brownson crossing

Roxanna Steele 18 of Crook Colo died at Memorial Hospital after a two vehicle collision at the Brownson crossing six point six miles west of Sidney along Highway 30. Two other Western Nebraska Technical College students, Perry Keys 18 of Elsmere and Brad Nutter 19 of Thedford, were injured critically. Keys received multiple injuries and was transported to Scottsbluff. Nutter was airlifted to Denver after initial treatment in Sterling. The 48 car Union Pacific train, traveling about 65 mph, struck the southbound car as it appeared to stop then moved forward. The crossing lacked signals beyond standard symbols.
