March storm brings moisture and travel disruption to Panhandle

A March storm swept into the southern Panhandle and northeastern Colorado, delivering moisture and high winds up to 50 mph. Snow totals reached several inches in Kimball Harrisburg Chadron Scottsbluff and Alliance with Sidney recording .74 inches and Chappell about .80. Roads blocked, some travelers stranded, and a few weather-related accidents occurred, but no serious injuries were reported. Schools were closed and many meetings postponed while farmers welcomed the moisture despite windblown conditions.

Exon forms 11 member drought task force

Gov James Exon announced an 11 member Drought Task Force to draft criteria for declaring federal drought disaster areas and to inform state agencies. The group will outline requirements for drought declarations and coordinate with federal authorities on relief measures.

Wheat Belt National Winner Tied for Second in Contest

Wheat Belt Public District based in Sidney has tied for second in the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association National Member Relations Contest, repeating a 2023 first place finish. The recognitions cite load control and energy conservation efforts from its irrigation rotation program, with a certificate presented by NRECA president John Dolinger at the association’s Atlanta meeting.

MAC Speech Contest at St Patrick's High School

The Minuteman Activities Conference Speech Contest will be held at Sidney St Patrick's High School on Wednesday March 9. Eight events are planned including oral interpretation poetry drama humor extemporaneous speaking duet acting reader's theatre and public address. St Pat's has won the conference the past three years and the district event follows on March 18 at Chadron.

Fire damages Ogallala motel

An early morning blaze gutted the office bar and restaurant of the Ogallala Holiday Inn. Fire Chief John Hilderbrand said the fire started about 1 45 a.m in the bar lounge area and spread to the kitchen and dining area. Fire crews arrived by 2 a.m and controlled the fire by 5 a.m with no damage estimate yet.

WIFE members return home after Washington trip

WIFE members from Nebraska, Colorado and Wyoming returned to the plains after a four day visit to Washington DC. Two buses carrying 86 farm wives departed the capital around 11:30 a.m. Thursday and were due in Lincoln and Sidney later today. Mrs Marian Lenzen of Sidney said the group found officials receptive but not promising parity. She noted possible rises in support prices but not full parity. Bergland said no commitments yet and hinted at adjustments for 1976 crop supports. The group pressed for higher loan rates and 100 percent parity targets and planned a full trip report and meeting in Sidney Tuesday.

No coercion for donations found in WNTC barracks giveaway

Western Nebraska Technical College in Scotts Bluff area faced questions over donations connected to barracks destruction for lumber. A Telegraph survey found no coercion. several contributors gave $50, with others planning to contribute. College president Dr Charles D. Michael said he will seek donations from Cheyenne County residents in coming springs.
