County Agent Ivan Liljegren reports initial signs of growth across Cheyenne County wheat fields as growers await a full April 1 survey. He notes potential better winter survival than in recent years and cites cutworm risk, wind erosion not yet evident, with harvest projections up to 6 million bushels based on fall seeding estimates.
Funeral services for 36 year old Bertha Eva Batt will be held at St Pauls Lutheran Church at 1 30 Friday afternoon. She died Tuesday at Cheyenne County Memorial Hospital after a stroke at Rudy's Inc. Burial in Greenwood Cemetery directed by Gehrig Son Funeral Home. Survived by father George Batt two sisters Martha Schnell and Chila Zodemann and brother Jacob Batt. mother and three brothers preceded. Pallbearers listed.
County commissioners heard a tale of a farmer who built a large quon Set type barn but left off the doors. The assessor valued the unfinished structure and ignored the missing doors, a dodge aimed at reducing tax rolls.
Police Chief Sol Willis urged dog owners to keep their pets in hand as spring nears to prevent damage to lawns gardens and flower beds. He noted only dog responsibility law requires owners to restrain pets after complaints and reduce neighborly hard feelings.
Col Wayne L. Wood states Sioux Ordnance Depot aims to stabilize payroll near 1100 workers with a mobile work force. The plan seeks steady jobs, reduced hiring and firing, and consistent operations to handle emergencies and maintain effectiveness.
The 1956 district campaign meeting of the American Cancer Society in Nebraska highlighted education alongside funds. Frederick H. Wagener led opening remarks on the need for public awareness and regular checkups. The session included talks by James Norvell and others, with key county representatives present. The Crusade officially opens on Sunday April 15 under the slogan Fight Cancer With a Checkup and a Check.
Sidney Rotarians elected Clark Fuller as their new president at the annual election of officers Monday night. Fuller is a Sidney farmer rancher and has been vice-president this past year. He takes office in July succeeding Donald W. Jorgenson. Other officers include ae Menes ce Vice-President Albert E. Nimtz Secretary Dr Marvin S. Sherrerd Treasurer Marius Christensen Directors J R Miller and Ed Runge. The meeting featured talks by the winners and runners-up in the American Legion speech contest with Carol Gonzales Lance Barker and Charlotte Ann Dorwart Jack King named in various top spots.
Lincoln Nebraska announced national trips to the National 4-H Club Camp in Washington DC next June. Winners include Cara Hutchinson Lancaster County Nadine Calvin Buffalo County Jack Nitz Saunders County and Pat Wright Morrill County. Wright is son of Dale and [unreadable] Wright of Bridgeport and earlier earned a National Club Congress trip for tractor club work.
The Maley Field five miles south of Sidney led Cheyenne County with 618,734 barrels from 13 wells in 1955. The Southwest Potter Field totaled 504,333 barrels from 53 oilers, with Cheyenne and Kimball counties ranking fields by 1955 output and well counts.
Congress and the Eisenhower administration face a pivotal choice on oil tax policy that could reshape Panhandle drilling. Independent operators, who make up the majority of local activity, warn that reducing the depletion allowance from 27 14 percent would threaten their finances and nearly halt wildcat work. Since January 1 Nebraska has 160 location announcements with independents responsible for 107 wells, and supplier activity largely serves these independent operators.
Ferris Preble new to Sidney politics this year as a candidate for city council. Primary election is March 13. He owns Preble's Red & White Market and has lived in Sidney since 1935. He is a Navy veteran and active in the American Legion, Chamber of Commerce, Jaycees, and Ft Sidney Days parade.
Part of the $98,000 civil judgment case pressed by Victoria Barajas of Minalare against Mr and Mrs Cliff Parker has been appealed to the Nebraska Supreme Court. The case stalled during trial due to a hung jury. Barajas appeals rulings by Judge John Kins denying a directed verdict. Her attorney says the judge erred in sending the case to the jury.
District Judge I J Nisley ruled Tuesday that oil and gas under Kimball streets and alleys belongs to adjoining property owners. The suit against the City of Kimball by Belgum sought to determine entitlement to minerals and payments of one million dollars.
The Sidney school board adopted a permanent teacher salary schedule to start in 1956 57. Total raises amount to 13 000 with some teachers gaining up to 10 a year while others see none. The plan rewards advanced training many years in the district and sets basic salary from 2940 to 4920 with top plus allowances reaching 5940.
Four men are jailed in Colorado after a Jan. 19 heifer butcher on a ranch near Sterling. Edward A. Johns and Almer B. Flint admit involvement and implicate Charles Ayotte and William Leroy Hess. Charges are expected today as investigators pursue leads from a car with packages of meat.
Cheyenne County commissioners gave the fair board approval to move ahead with a new multi purpose building at the fairgrounds. A preliminary drawing by Stewart Brown shows a 40 by 96 foot structure with a stage and kitchen to serve 4 H and Rural Youth groups. Construction is estimated at 8000 to 10000 dollars with part funded by Ak Sar Ben grants and rest from tax money over time. The shell will be completed this year for booths and exhibits, with kitchen and other rooms added later. Bids will be sought after detailed drawings are finished.
