Government to plant forests on Nebraska sand hills
A Washington dispatch reports the bureau of forestry will seed about 100 acres at the Dismal River forest reserve near Halsey this spring with red cedar and jack pine. If successful, plans call for 1,000 acres the next year and gradual expansion across 203,000 acres of the Dismal River and Niobrara reserves. A nursery, seed bed, tool house, and office have been established at Halsey. Nearly 600 pounds of seed, chiefly western yellow pine, red cedar, and jack pine, have been collected for spring planting. The sand hills are unsuitable for farming, but growing forests could yield valuable timber for a country with little timber and high lumber prices. The effort has strong prospects of success.
