Former deputy sheriff Leslie E. Bosley argues police face public misconceptions and stresses officers are human. He calls for sustained support, training, and fair funding to build first-rate law enforcement and mutual citizen cooperation.
Funeral services for Walter R. Wiegers 61 of Lodgepole will be at Weyerts Immanuel Lutheran Church with Rev. Kenneth Malpert officiating. Interment follows in Weyerts Cemetery. Wiegers died Monday in a Scottsbluff hospital after an extended illness. He was born July 26, 1908 in Western Nebraska and married Myrtle Reed in 1937. He leaves a widow a son a daughter six brothers six sisters and six grandchildren. A memorial is established to Weyerts Church.
Mrs. Walter Schubarth 48, formerly of Gurley and Potter, died Monday in Memorial Hospital Cheyenne after an extended illness. Funeral services are Thursday at 10 a.m. in Trinity Lutheran Cheyenne and 3 p.m. at St. Pauls Lutheran north of Potter with burial in St. Paul Cemetery. Pallbearers named. surviving husband, four daughters, three brothers, one sister, and six grandchildren.
Cheyenne County and nearby districts debate base pay as schools face rising costs and teacher shortages. Sidney raises to 6500 and Gurley to 6400, with 4 percent per year of experience and per college hours. Local boards seek to stay competitive to retain qualified staff and benefit students.
Cheyenne County Chamber of Commerce invites members to the annual banquet next Tuesday night at the National Guard Armory. Elks Club will join the dinner, aiming for 600 attendees at 2.95 dollars per ticket. Tickets available at the chamber office or via board members. Rae L Jones chairs the ticket committee.

Extended outlook shows partly cloudy Friday and Saturday, colder Sunday with a chance of snow and daily highs around 45 to 55.
Longtime Sidney businessman Carl Hutchison died at Memorial Hospital after a period of ill health. Gehrig and Son Funeral Home handling arrangements. The Lodgepole Potter lakes project faces highway department objections over gravel suitability but is not dead, with Recreation Conservation and Development efforts planned and Chamber of Commerce backing renewed actions.
Nine schools compete in Minuteman Activities Conference speech and one act play contest at St Patrick’s High School next Tuesday March 10. About 150 students participate with judging by Chadron State College staff led by Fred Wheeler. A trophy goes to the school with the most points.
Volunteers coached by Mrs. Sally Ybarra Dittmar at the Senior Citizens Center prepare for a county nutrition census. Organizers say statewide sessions train workers from agencies and churches to identify hungry residents for the Project 93 meeting in Lincoln on March 17.
Arthur G. McMillen 67 of Sidney dies after 15 days in Memorial Hospital. He was active in Cheyenne County affairs, serving 17 years on the Fair Board and 24 years on the District Five school board. Survived by widow Edna, three sons, a daughter, eight grandchildren, and siblings. Funeral Friday at First United Methodist Church, burial Greenwood Cemetery. Craig Holechek Funeral Home in charge.
KSID radio will sponsor an all electric cooking school titled Design for Living on April 8 and 9 at St. Patrick's Youth Center. Miss Karen Hastings will conduct the school with local and national sponsors. The event has drawn hundreds in past years and attendees will receive a free Design for Living cook book per KSID general manager David W. Young. Further details will be released soon.
Cheyenne County Chamber of Commerce Industrial Development Committee, led by James Payne, reviews a computer filtered list of over two thousand industrial prospects to prioritize targets for western Nebraska. The plan focuses on electronics and related equipment, plastics, and food products, with a labor survey and a statewide ad push in Business and Industry magazine to solicit concrete offers.
Manager Ed Cole reported study results on proposed no toll intra county calls from an earlier meeting by Mr. Enevoldsen. County communities opposed feasibility. Ticket sales for the annual banquet reached about 194 with a goal of 625. sales at the door urged. Board agreed to assist Cheyenne County Fair board and Fort Sidney Days Corporation but no financial aid due to limited chamber budget.
Mr. Cole reports daily inquiries at the Chamber office about housing for Interstate 80 workers and families. The county needs housing for 30 families now with many more expected, and communities are urged to respond to keep workers in the area.
E K Yanney reported on Nebraska Highway representatives meeting with the Chamberboard the county commissioners and Sidney city council. He said the sessions were healthy with much gained noting Cheyenne County’s proximity to the Interstate. Officials cited Ogallala where 400 jobs arose from highway access and a public hearing may be held before deciding on the I 80 south interchange in Sidney due to protests.
The RC&D group meets at the Cheyenne County Chamber of Commerce office on Thursday at 7 30 p m with Stan Juelfs of Kimball in charge. The meeting will advance area project work while the Ladies Division reports 44 paid members for 1970 and plans a membership drive aligned with the Chamber campaign starting mid March. The board approves 100 for painting a highway sign at Highway 30 marking the Wes tern Nebraska Vocational Technical School turnoff, to be built at the school with a Nebraska outline map.
The board suggested names to represent the county at the 1970 Nebraska Congressional reception in Washington D C at the Madison Hotel on April 27. Invites were approved for the board of county commissioners and Sidney city representatives to join the trip. A note cautioned about rising vandalism among youths, urging citizen action.
