Oil boom transforms a Nebraska farm family story

Mrs. Mary Egging, widow with ten children on a Cheyenne County wheat farm, watches western Nebraska's first oil well near Gurley as nearby wells draw staff and oil men. Her family endured the Dust Bowl era, mortgage strain, and a 15 year fight to survive, with sons expanding the farm and the prospect of wealth from oil looming yet not changing daily farm life.

How Much Money Will 300 Barrel Oil Well Yield

Analysis shows landowners get one eighth of oil under a standard lease with The Ohio Oil Co. If the Mary Egging well near Gurley maintains 300 barrels daily, at $2.50 per barrel the owner would receive about $90 per day. Production may not reach that level or be pumped at capacity, but any amount above zero would be welcome.
