Wheat harvest opens at Dalton Co-Op elevator
The first load of 1977 winter wheat arrived at the Dalton Co-Op Assoc elevator Saturday, brought by John Marrin who farms eight miles northwest of Dalton. He delivered 280 bushels of 56 pound wheat with 11 percent moisture and dark hard wheat with good protein. Lawrence Miller, manager, noted it as the earliest arrival in his 30 years in the business. The Marrins expect to finish cutting and store the rest on the farm as the elevator, half full, has room for 128,000 bushels.

Train Derailment Near Sidney Involving Eight Cars
An eastbound Union Pacific freight derailed near Sidney at 4:30 p.m. Saturday with eight cars off the track, seven loaded and one empty. No injuries reported. westbound track restored by 11:25 p.m. and eastbound by 1:05 a.m. Cause under investigation. Three cars carried lead bars, one zinc ingots, three lumber. This marks the third UP derailment near Sidney since June.

Federal permit needed to fill old stream marsh
The Army Corps of Engineers says a federal permit is required from July 1 to place any fill in rivers streams marshes or wetlands. Farming operations are exempt. Permits extend to waterways flowing five cubic feet per second or faster and to marshlands.
