City Board Pushes Water System as Town Grows

Village Board met with Engineer Welch to review plans for a new water plant. Bid advertisements will begin later this month for a steel reservoir on the north hill with 125 to 150 thousand gallons capacity to serve about 3,000 people, providing fire protection and pressure to upper floors. The project aims to be durable and scalable, avoiding costly future reconstructions as the town expands.

Fourth of July Plans Spread Across Nearby Towns

Sidney residents are invited to celebrate the Fourth with visits to Dalton Potter and Lodgepole for daytime and evening programs. Dalton’s first major effort, Potter and Lodgepole bring prior festival experience, with Sidney citizens expected to attend. Hailstorms Hit County In Brief Local Outbreaks

Hail struck the county in two separate days this week causing crop damage in spots. Some fields were partly destroyed while others escaped with little or no harm. Unscreened windmills and fans suffered, but overall the region avoided broader disasters.

Swan Dedrick and Ed Yeagle bought a merry go round and set it on the corner of Rose and Third streets. Sidney youngsters donate their Independence Day money to ride the ponies as the ride plans a circuit to Lodgepole Julesburg and other towns before returning to Sidney.

Merchant of Venice to be staged Monday by Sanford Dodge

The Merchant of Venice will be presented here for the first time on Monday June 29 with Sanford Dodge and his company. Geo W Hicks of Potter represents Union Fire Insurance of Lincoln and was in the city Tuesday.

The Frank Welch lodge held a Saturday night installation with large attendance. Installing officer was J. J. McIntosh and Grand Marshall was H. Schroeder. New officers include C. Callahan W M, W. R. Weekend Heat Beat Chicago as Native Sizzles Cooler

The article notes last weekend’s peak warmth with 104 on Saturday 99 on Sunday and 94 on Monday at about 11 30 each day. Instead of complaints the natives rejoiced at not sizziling at Chicago’s higher temperatures. they claimed enduring heat is less harsh when lower.

Local Runaway, Tornado Sightings, and School Meeting

A brief account notes a horse and buggy runaway in Morrow addition and a demonstration tornado in the valley described by L R North of Bridgeport. John W Ballard, AOUW deputy grand master, visited Sidney initiating twenty into the lodge. A school meeting is scheduled next Monday at 2 pm at the courthouse, with ongoing public school concerns.

Beating the Railroads and a Trio of Travelers

Sidney hosts three visitors in a curious wager. John Walsh, a New York to San Francisco pedestrian, is thirty days ahead on a five thousand dollar bet and plans to return in 180 days. He has slimmed to 122 pounds from 180, carries 40 pounds of luggage, and praises local roads and meals. Motorcyclists James Williams and H L Rothe travel Omaha to Columbus to Sidney on bikes named Exelgier and Thor, showcasing a carefree expedition spirit.

Prospective Fireproof Building Planned Near Bank

J. J. McIntosh considers erecting a stone or brick structure on his lot south of the American Bank. The embryo building would measure 22 by 54 feet with fireproof material. C. W. Hornaday has shown interest in leasing the space to expand his business. McIntosh has no firm plans yet, but the town buzzes with building ambitions as the project possibilities spread.

Simla man smiles with Sidney friends on journey

Johnnie Scherer of Simla travels with Mr. Halstead to Sidney and reports there was no hail in Simla larger than a duck egg. The note ends with a cheerful remark about hearing the straight of things.

Cheyenne Nine to Play Sidney Here Sunday

The Cheyenne railroad nine will meet the Sidney baseball team in town Sunday. Water works superintendent John McCart inspected our water service this week. Joe Taylor, once with Sidney, now in Greenville SC, has recovered from a month of illness. HB A Webb and family visited Mrs Webb's mother and baptized a daughter at the Lutheran church. Foreman A J Nicholson and wife travel to Terre Haute Ind for relatives and a sister's wedding on July 1. Cc C Callahan installs electric lighting in shops and coal chutes this week, soon in round houses. City water outage Monday night followed a 4 inch main break at the round house. crew repaired by Tuesday. A box car blew off a Lodgepole siding during high wind, but no injuries. track blocked briefly until cleanup Tuesday morning.

Boy's Trip Curtailed

Walter Benson a fourteen year old boy was apprehended by Sheriff Mc Daniel at Mitchells barn where he was working. The lads father had telegraphed from Pine Bluff for McDaniel to look out for the runaway and upon receipt of the news that the boy was here Mr Benson came and got him.

The Merchant of Venice at Sidney With Mr Dodge

Mr Sanford Dodge and his excellent company present The Merchant of Venice Monday night June 29 in Sidney. Louise Marshall as Portia has drawn favorable comment for her portrayal. The cast is said to be the best Dodge has ever carried with elaborate scenery and costumes.

Destructive Hailstorm Strikes Bridgeport Area

Reports from Bridgeport describe a severe hailstorm Monday evening, one of the most destructive in memory. Hailstones allegedly three inches in diameter fell for about thirty minutes, damaging roofs windows and crops though no damage estimates are yet available due to unknown storm area.
