Great Plains Park in Panhandle Could Enrich Plains Heritage
A survey by a panel of college professors with park service officials near Scottsbluff considers a 70 by 30 mile grassland park in the Panhandle from Mitchell to Fort Laramie and north of the valley. The plan envisions restoring pre white settlement grasslands with bison and antelope, clearing fences, and creating camping facilities to study grazing and attract tourists. Fort Laramie and Scottsbluff would anchor a region of historic Oregon Trail value and potential stockgrower benefits. Professors from Illinois, Texas, Arizona, Oklahoma, Saskatchewan and North Dakota state colleges lead the effort.
