Proper Soil Care Holds Hard Rains
The Middle West Soil Improvement Committee reports on two Sanborn Field plots at the University of Missouri where corn has grown since 1888. The fertilized plot, with straw stalks and manure, absorbs rain quickly and resists erosion, while the unfertilized plot seals over and loses moisture and soil. Fertilizer plus crop residues builds soil structure, aiding yields and profits by lowering per bushel or per ton costs.
