Wheat prospects rise as rust feared in Nebraska reports

Thorpe Appointed County Judge to Succeed Barlow

The Board of County Commissioners appointed Attorney J L Thorpe as County Judge to succeed the late Robert A Barlow, who died after a long illness. Thorpe will serve until January 1955 with an election set for next year. He will disqualify himself from county court cases and audit of the judge's office is underway by state auditors. Thorpe, a UW law graduate, practices in Sidney and Dalton and leads the Sidney Kiwanis Club.

Potter Stores Close Saturday for Fort Sidney Days Parade

Most Potter business houses will close on Saturday from nine a.m. to 2 30 p.m. so that workers can travel to Sidney for the Fort Sidney Days parade and celebrations. The Potter State Bank will open at eight Saturday morning instead of nine and stay open until 9 30.

Fort Sidney Days Opens With Colorful Festivities

The fifth annual Fort Sidney Days festival kicks off at Sidney High School athletic field with a grand opening, parades, square dances, pageants, and free showings slated through the weekend. Old Timers register, period costumes appear, 10,000 attendees expected, and badges grant free admission to major events.

Henry George Morrison representative of Minneapolis division headquarters will attend a full day of meetings next Wednesday with the Sidney Chamber of Commerce directors four committees and the Lions Club. George Kolzow secretary of the local Chamber reports lined up meetings during the day.

July 4 Celebration Planned At Dalton

The Dalton Lions Club announces a large Independence Day celebration in Dalton with free ice cream lemonade and coffee for picnickers. A Sidney and Dalton league baseball game is set for afternoon, followed by a Dalton high school band concert fireworks display and a Legion Hall dance in the evening. Lions urge all to attend the colorful fireworks show.

Oil activity grows as Ryan Oil starts No 1 Hennemann well

Ryan Oil Co begins No 1 Hennemann well half mile southwest of Gurley on a farmout from Ohio Oil Co. Driller S D Johnson of Wichita Falls directs operations on Section 31-16-49. Ohio had a lease start deadline of June 14, met as the well began over the weekend. Other Ohio wells in Preble Field near Gurley show potential, with No 2 Rauner planned as a producer, some water encountered, and casing run for sand production. Chicago Corp Natural Gas reports casing at Doran No 7, no DST, and coring at Doran No 8 as gas pressures disrupt production. Kimball County activity slows with few wells drilling, more expected.

Check Writer Is Sentenced

Robert C. Valondry pleaded guilty to writing no account checks and was sentenced Wednesday to one year in the Nebraska State Penitentiary. District Judge I J Nisley presided in Cheyenne County district court. He was arrested in Sterling after Sheriff W W Schultz encountered him. Judge Nisley also appointed L M Clinton as attorney for Shirley Stearns charged with theft of two rings from Margie Kahl at Mrs Susan Rogers residence on June 5 amid a $1500 bond. Ore Davis faced theft charges for saddles and bridles from Clarence Dorman’s farm and is held on a $2000 bond.

Bond sales hit strong May total in Cheyenne County

Cheyenne County reports defense bond purchases in May reached 17 775 dollars. Statewide individual bond sales totaled 5 210 241 89 dollars as Leland R Hall noted. He called it the sixth straight month of year over year gains and said the excess of sales over redemptions in Nebraska for the first four months surpassed 22 million, stressing the reserve value for residents.
