The Nebraska State Health Department reports a potential polio year with cases mainly among older adults. Mildred Hussman, 54, of Ogallala is noted as the latest victim. polio deaths so far match last year and exceed 1957, raising concern.
State records show polio deaths in 1957 already match or exceed the totals of years past as paralytic cases rise to 48 with four deaths this year, while 1955 saw four deaths from 111 paralytic cases and 1954 recorded 19 deaths in 324 paralytic cases. Health Director Dr E A Rogers warns adults are at higher risk.
