Sidney stockholders of Farmers Co op Grain Co plan a June 24 meeting to approve a 160000 dollar 250000 bushel grain elevator. If approved, construction would start soon with tax amortization and federal support aiding storage for Cheyenne County wheat identified for higher prices.

Weather conditions favor an early wheat harvest in eastern Nebraska with a potential start by Friday or Saturday. Sidney reports heavy wheat damage in Southern Cheyenne and all Kimball Counties from breath and disease, hail and insects. Cheyenne County endured hot dry weather over the weekend with highs near 89 degrees on Sunday and 81 by 9 30 am Monday the first day of summer. A forecast of possible thundershowers offered minor relief while Fort Sidney Days drew thousands from nearby areas.

Masons Mark 75th Milestone in Sidney

Frank Welch Lodge No. 75 AF and AM, Sidney, will mark its 75th anniversary with a Friday program in the Masonic Temple. Most Worshipful Grand Master Charles F. Kimball County Gets Emergency Wind Erosion Aid

Governor Crosby, informed by Sen. Bowring and Merriman, secured approval from Secretary Benson for Kimball County to receive emergency wind erosion control funds up to 1.25 per acre. It becomes the fourth Nebraska county aided after Hayes, Dundy, and Hitchcock. Crosby cited severe conditions in western Kimball, including drought, mosaic wheat disease, and a recent hail event, threatening harvest prospects for about 10,000 acres of wheat from 185,000 seeded.

Banner County Seeks Oil Spotlight In Julesburg Basin

In Julesburg Basin a top well lies five miles south of Sidney on land bought in 1889 by a pioneer who traded a horse for ownership. The Buchan No. 1, initially rated at 600 barrels daily, now produces about 80 and could reach 125. Four wells share the Maley pool with South Texas, British American, and Magnolia firms active, all producing and trucking oil out.

Bowman Asks Commutation in Cheyenne County Murder Case

William Bowman, convicted of first degree murder on December 2, 1937, seeks commutation and parole. A July 28 hearing date is set for him and three other Cheyenne County inmates J E DeJardin Foster Gross and Donald Adams. Bowman and Orville Childers killed Sidney resident William F Moore during a home invasion believed to target money. Authorities said Moore had little cash in the house.

Here’s A Chance To Buy 4-H Beef At Cheyenne Fair

Twice as many 4-H beeves will go to auction at this year's Cheyenne County Fair as bidders are urged to support the sale. Last year 25 beeves sold at top prices and encouraged 4-Hers. Sidney businessmen and local residents helped drive demand, and this year more bidders are needed for full beef auctions or for quarters and halves via Star Packing or local firms.

Northwestern Bell Telephone completes mobile telephone setup in Sidney with twenty units installed and more planned. The system lets users in or out of vehicles place and answer calls, promising reception within a 35 mile radius of the nearest headquarters.
