Sidney businesses name sixteen nominees for Employee of the Year. Judging occurs during Employee Days Thursday to Saturday based on sales, courtesy, friendliness, and appearance. A $25 prize funded by the Chamber of Commerce Retail Trade Committee will go to the winner.
Final inspection of Soap Box Derby cars is set for Wednesday night at the National Guard Armory. Trials begin Sunday morning with the race at 2 PM next Sunday on the south 11th Avenue hill. A public show of cars runs 5:30 to 8 PM at the Armory Saturday. the winner earns 500 dollars and a trip to Akron. second place takes a bicycle.
Sidney volunteers aided Sterling during the flood by using a cattle truck to move 22,500 head from Seckler Feed Lots with seven Saddle Club riders and local drivers. They herded cattle across mud and highway to higher pasture as power shut off after arrival, then returned home by night’s end.
Despite staying 40 miles from Sidney the South Platte flood devastates Crook Colorado. The town is submerged as cattle are moved to higher ground and Highway 138 is washed out. Crests hit Crook by 9 15 am with widespread bridge and road damage and limited escape routes.
Mrs. Augusta Krohn, 72, died Sunday at her Sidney home. Services Wednesday at 2 PM at St. Paul Lutheran with Rev. Clarence Boye officiating. Burial in Greenwood Cemetery. Memorials to charitable institutions or missionaries preferred. Survived by husband Henry F. Krohn, three daughters, two sons, 12 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, and siblings.
Dennis D. Dumler resigns as Northwestern Bell manager in Sidney effective July 1 to become a systems analyst for The Colorado National Bank in Denver. Richard S. Thailing will assume duties July 12, transferring from Omaha where he held the role of Marketing Promotion Supervisor. Thailing, a Grinnell College graduate and West Virginia native, previously served in the U.S. Army and with Meredith Publishing. He and wife Sybil plan to move to Sidney once housing is arranged.
Marvin Anthony, longtime operator of The Farmers Produce Co. at 1003 Hickory St., Sidney, will retire on July 1 after more than 35 years in cream and egg buying, feed and seed sales, and serving local farmers. The Farmers Feed and Seed Co. will continue the cream and egg business at east Illinois St. Anthony plans to enjoy hunting and fishing and will sell his cream and egg operations to his nearby buyer.
Senator George H. Fleming of Sidney says LB764 merging major public power holdings remains good legislation if amended. he also backs a sales tax or combined sales income tax to broaden Nebraska’s tax base, hoping for a final vote before the session ends. He predicts a very close vote on LB797 and on the Gerdes Fleming sales tax plan, contingent on amendments and economic impact assessments.
Reinhart M. Franzen of Sidney dies Saturday afternoon at 59. Funeral services Tuesday at 2 PM from Immanuel Lutheran Church Weyerts with Rev. Alvin Danielson and nephew Rev. Norman Franzen of Concordia. Burial in Weyerts Cemetery. Mor tuary handled. Memorials suggested for Immanuel bell tower. Survivors include wife Rosina, two sons Raymond and Roger, daughter Roberta Sick, seven grandchildren, three siblings, and many relatives.
The Panhandle is expected to see a few late afternoon thunder showers then fair, mild conditions. Tonight’s low should be in the 50s to 60s with a high tomorrow between 70 and 80 degrees.
Siren tested this morning as the city replaces the old Elks building alarm with a new civil defense and fire warning siren. Located on a steel tower, it should reach all parts of town, prompting many to call about the test amid fears of storms.
The Sidney Livestock Sales Pavilion saw bids reach 24.15, a five year high. Stocker and feeder cattle light weights topped at 32 while light calves averaged 35 per head. An Ovid Cole producer sold feeder steers averaging 746 lbs at 25.90. Replacement cattle demand is very heavy, says pavilion manager Dave Truss. One Cheyenne County buyer seeks 300 head but is hard to find.
County Agent Ivan Liljegren reports most wheat looks excellent except a hail strip north and northeast of Sidney. Some hail damaged fields may regrow and yield modest crops if weather stays favorable. If hail came earlier, recovery would be better. some farmers plan millet reseeding, with a window up to the Fourth of July in severe cases.
The Sidney Chamber of Commerce Retail Trade Committee sets July 23 as Sidewalk Sales Day. A uniform outfit for sales staff, including a bright red vest and a blue and white straw hat, is sold at 1.75 dollars, with canes available for 75 cents. Outfits on sale through July 1 to boost event appeal.
