Soil Moisture Is Ample Now Road, Bridge Damage Costly

County roads and bridges suffered extensive damage after heavy rains and flooding this week. Five bridges washed out and 22 more require repairs as southeastern areas near U S 30 and east of State Route 19 show widespread damage. Only a single north south road remains passable toward Hand's Corner. Ground is soft and further deterioration could occur with more rain. Northern county fared better while Legion Park in Sidney lost 1,000 feet of oil and Hillside Golf Course escaped major damage. Winds to 50 mph caused a western Sidney blackout lasting about two hours. Water erosion hit soil, fences, and small buildings along Lodgepole Creek, though ranchers reported livestock mostly safe. Weather data shows increased moisture. Sidney totals through mid-June reach 13.35 inches with 4.51 inches since last Tuesday. The outlook is optimistic for crops and grazing as greened pastures replace prior drought. Cheyenne County wheat crops face hail risk but prospects remain favorable if conditions stabilize.
