Sidney plans a major Natal Day celebration featuring a large crowd, choir, speeches, band music, and a court house stage for a patriotic program titled In the Cause of Freedom. Home Guards drill, intertown competition, and a national speaker will share tales of the war as art posters warn travelers.
Kreuger and Stuht sold their ice plant to the Artificial Ice company and turned over tracks and equipment. Elmer Kruger will join the army and Ernest Stitt, short of help, cannot continue deliveries. The Artificial Ice Company operates near day and night with two wagons, sourcing ice from Sterling to meet demand. June remains an exceptional ice month. Mrs Fred Dawson and daughter Trene of Laramie visited Mrs T B Dawson before she sails to Pennsylvania.
The Red path-Horner Chautauqua in Sidney ran from Thursday of last week to Monday evening. It featured four lectures on patriotism and democracy, strong war era themes, fine music by The Althea Players and others, and notable readers Electra Platt and Benny Brooks. Veterans Turley and Little told stories of war, elevating the program and promising welcome returns.
Several local men were injured in accidents this week affecting their ability to work. Jim Dowling suffered a wrenching incident on the Waterloo-Boy tractor project. J W Walker cut his elbow needing stitches and possible stiffness. Joe A Clemeth cut his knee with a draw knife during an elevator project at Colton. Dell Thompson, a baker for Breternitz, lost a thumb and damaged a finger in a bread mixer incident. Mr Bromwell of Bromwell and Kinney traveled to Scottsbluff on business.
