The Sidney Police Department, with mayoral backing, warns all reckless drivers that leniency ends. Chief R H Rogers says officers will strictly crack down to curb traffic violations and prevent fatal incidents. Continued on page 8, column 2.
Governor Roy Cochran and State Engineer Tilley visited Sidney on Wednesday en route to Bayard for the Gift of God pageant and to Bridgeport for an address. Returning to Lincoln they will survey flood district needs in southwestern Nebraska where road rebuilding is seen as a major issue. They met P. J. Heaton, president of the state young democrats, and Dr. R. E. Roche.
T. E. Kokjer of the Kokjer Motor company joins other Chevrolet dealers in Scottsbluff to celebrate a full trainload of Chevrolet trucks. A parade through the downtown and a large luncheon will follow unloading, marking the largest shipment in western Nebraska history.
A telegram informs Robert S. Oberfelder of the death of W. L. Park of Los Angeles former general manager of the Union Pacific and a once well known brakeman in Sidney. Details of death not provided. Many old time railroaders recall Mr. Park.
An estimated 1500 attended Cheyenne county farmers union annual picnic at Krueger's lake on Wednesday. A large crowd listened to a program of sports and speeches with overflow seating around the platform. Speakers included Dr W T Kahse and Robert Robertson of Sidney, H C Hansen of Hemingford, Ben L Peters of Omaha, and C G Olson of Omaha. An amateur contest was won by Clara bell Haxby of Lodge Pole with Lester Theis second and Charlotte Bluhm of Sunol also noted.
The Sidney Parts & Bearing company issued a catalog of repair parts price lists and general stock lines to be distributed on request. It focuses on Baldwin repair parts and summarizes 13 nationally advertised lines of repair and replacement parts carried by the firm. Farmers and others can obtain a free catalog by phoning or writing the company.
Grace Lutheran church of Gurley observes its 20th anniversary on Sunday with attendance by the Trinity Lutheran congregation of Sidney replacing regular services in Gurley. Dr. Martin, president of Midland College, Fremont, and several pastors will speak. Dr. W T Kahse urges members to bring lunches and spend the day at Gurley with the celebrants.
The Gift of God religious pageant at Bayard closes its 1936 run this evening barring bad weather. A crowd of more than 5000 is expected after strong first two nights with 2144 counted Tuesday and 4793 on Wednesday from 11 states. Sidney sent a chorus of 70 voices and a cast of 150 residents across 16 episodes ending with the resurrection. Two grand spectacles drew the audience, with many locals attending annually. Hundreds of Baby bonds each worth 50 dollars were handed to 250 war veterans in and near Sidney on Tuesday morning. Post office staff watched varied reactions as veterans signed for the bonds. Some were calm, others nervous, a few struggled with signatures. In Nebraska City a guard guarded the bond sack amid decoy mail to deter robbers. Veterans examined the bonds and doubted forgery, while Uncle Sam warned of possible theft schemes. Continued on page 8, column 3.
The Northwestern Bell Telephone Company will charge 15 cents a month for hand telephones for 36 months starting July 1, down from 25 cents. Payments can pause up to four months if made within the same state exchange and no break occurs. No replacement fee after July 1 for desk or wall phones. This is the third rate cut since introduction of hand phones at 50 cents monthly.
Art Nelson a Sidney cattle buyer is in Scottsbluff hospital with possible brain concussion and other injuries from a car overturn north of Minatare Wednesday noon. Nelson was a passenger in Carl Olson s car. A blowout caused the car to swerve off the road. Olson was unhurt except for scratches and bruises. A third man from Dalton suffered an injured back. The men were on a cattle buying trip.
Mr and Mrs Willard Givens and two children of Washington DC visited Judge and Mrs J L Tewell and family this week. They were en route to Portland for the National Education Association convention where Givens serves as national secretary and is a former Oakland California public schools superintendent.
Cecil V. Sowards a Sidney attorney was bound over to district court by County Judge R. A. Barlow after a three hour session on embezzlement charges involving 150 dollars believed taken from Doyle Sizemore. The defense sought governmental records from the rehabilitation office but the documents were ruled confidential. a subpoena was issued for the records. The case proceeded with cross examination and objections as the defense pressed for access to the records.
The weekly state and federal crop report notes eastern Nebraska suffers drought with very short moisture and poor oats and grasses, while western Nebraska enjoys ample moisture and better conditions. Grasshoppers are heavy in many counties, with replanting due to weak seed and some flood damage.
A 4-H club judging school is scheduled in Sidney on June 27 under the direction of County Agent J. C. Swinbank. Classes cover animal husbandry including horses cattle hogs and sheep plus crops poultry cooking canning clothing and girls room projects. The event runs 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. with a noon picnic on the courthouse lawn. counties invited include Keith Deuel Kimball Morrill Garden and Perkins.
Three transients admitted breaking into an automobile and were bound over to district court by County Judge Barlow. Names given were Robert Wilkinson of San Francisco Gordon Thompson of Buffalo New York and Robert Carson of Arkansas. They await sentencing by District Judge J L Tewell this week. County attorney said additional evidence existed but chose to charge only simple burglary.
Members of Frank Welch Masonic Judge of Sidney plan to attend the morning service at the Methodist church Sunday June 21. The occasion commemorates St John the Baptist a patron saint of Free Masonry. Rev J J Sheaff will speak on John the Baptist a Man with a Message.
Extreme heat blanketed Nebraska with many areas hitting or surpassing 100 degrees. Lincoln readings crossed 100 as Sidney reached 101, prompting mixed views from farmers on crop impact. Winter wheat prospects were hopeful where hail damage was avoided, while spring grains needed moisture.
The board of commissioners met Tuesday with routine business and approved claims. General fund expenditures include a 4000 dollar payment to Sidney Tractor and Machinery Co. for two auto patrols. A beer license was granted to Erwin Seimers at Bronson and Hanson Audit Co. was awarded the 1935 audit contract for 350 dollars. Complete copies of proceedings are on file at Telegraph office.
A scheduled 15 round bout between Joe Louis and Max Schmeling was halted by a drenching downpour, delaying the fight from last night. Radio reports warned of a severe New York storm, but meteorologists predicted clearing skies for tonight.
C A Ross, Nebraska railway commission expert, filed a plan with the interstate commerce commission for a 1 to 4 percent reduction in grain freight rates, aiming to save about 15000 dollars for Panhandle wheat growers this year. The adjustment would affect shipments from Cheyenne, Deuel, Kimball, and Banner counties to Omaha via Union Pacific, with targets to take effect July 1 1936 and possibly August 15 for speed.
Cheyenne county was the only panhandle county to gain in farm population from 1930 to 1935, adding 379 people. Eight panhandle counties lost residents, Sioux county the largest. statewide, 93 counties lost about 5,000 farm residents.
Rua Lucile Buss, a 19 year old Peetz resident, drowned in an irrigation reservoir south of Peetz while swimming with her brother and a neighbor. She stepped into a deep hole near the shore. rescuers retrieved her body after about two hours. Dr C V Ketchum attempted resuscitation without success. A Peetz High School sophomore, she lived on a nearby farm. Funeral services were held in Sterling.
Hogs shipped to Farmers Union Live Stock Commission in Denver by H. E. Jacobson of Sidney topped last Tuesday's market and beat Chicago prices. Thirteen Hampshire hogs averaging 212 pounds sold for $10.25 per hundred, five cents above Chicago. Heavier 240 pound hogs brought $10.20, 15 cents above Chicago top. A consignment of sows topped at $8.75, above Omaha peak.
A district 4 street upgrade estimate shows owner costs rising from about 38 to 55.44 per 66 foot lot. City cost about 6775 with 84 cents per foot. Ten year payments at 4 percent would be around 6.65 annually for full lots. District 5 prospects raise owner costs to 64.68 per 66 foot lot with yearly payments near 7.76.
The Sidney chamber of commerce sponsored museum seeks relics and curios including Native specimens, geological formations, and items from Indian, wagon, pony express, early railroad, and Sidney Deadwood days. Offerings to city hall may be loaned or donated with donor names if desired.
Under Title I 35 insured modernization loans have been made totaling $14,523.14 as of April 30 in Cheyenne County. Since August 1934, Nebraska FHA insured 4,340 loans totaling $1,484,162.66. Title II 341 home mortgages insured totaling $1,119,970. National FHA totals as of May 28 show Title I loans 52,829 totaling $381,180,799 and Title II loans 72,862 totaling $293,490,861.
L. H. Dillon, WPA engineer in Cheyenne county for months, moved yesterday to Scotts Bluff to assume a similar role for Scotts Bluff county. The Scotts Bluff peak load ranks third in the state, and Dillon will manage a larger job there. No permanent engineer will be assigned to Cheyenne county for now, with Mark Gyger of chappell to oversee work here regularly.
Several Sidney homeowners have enhanced their grounds with native rock gardens this week after a landscape artist from Pasadena, California, arrived. The artist laid out distinctive designs at homes of Henry Johnson, Art Holm, Mrs. Florence Trognitz, and Dr. W. T. Kahse, creating attractive features that reflect well on the properties and community.
Unne Daugherty was sent to the Lincoln reformatory yesterday to serve a year at hard labor for embezzling $50 from the Jessen Oil company. He was bound over to district court by County Judge Barlow after entering a guilty plea. The charge states he kept $50 collected while employed by the company.
The district four American Legion picnic will be held at Lake Minatare this coming Sunday June 21 with a large delegation of Legion and auxiliary members from Sidney expected. The event was postponed from last Sunday due to boat racing and carnival at the lake.
Pioneer cattleman Mack Radcliffe leaves Sidney for the Dallas Fort Worth Texas Centennial. He recalls guiding longhorns along the old trail about six decades ago. With Mike Haggerty he travels by a new automobile, viewing Centennial sights and enjoying faster travel.
