Western Nebraska faces widespread spring grain losses as June heat continues. Temperatures near and above 95 degrees baked fields in the Panhandle with forecasts predicting near 100. Spring wheat suffers extensive damage with oats and barley also hit hard, leaving few sound fields in parts of the county.
Merle Niemeller was arrested Saturday night for speeding and reckless driving in Sidney. Police Chief R H Rogers said Niemeller wove through traffic on King Street and Illinois Avenue while driving a Ford at excessive speed. The officer followed the pursuit and Niemeller was fined 1 dollar plus costs totaling 3 70. City plans increased enforcement with traffic violation tags warning of future arrests and warrants. The chamber of commerce directors reach an agreement with Fox Theatre to offer five cent matinees for children 12 and under this Saturday, June 27, with the civic club and theatre sharing losses. Ray Babcock says the move will boost shopping Saturdays by keeping kids entertained and parents free to shop. Ned Collins confirms five cent admission during regular matinee hours until 6 pm, with pictures chosen for young audiences. The experiment will run for an undetermined period to gauge success and potential continuation.
Frank D. Throp, chairman of the Nebraska emergency relief committee, announced allotment of 28,374 in federal funds to counties unable to meet relief needs unaided. Panhandle counties receive June allotments: Box Butte 303, Cheyenne 720, Morrill 141, Scotts Bluff 3,999. Allocations based on 60 percent of total relief need for one month per county, using the latest case load data.
Sidney council Knights of Columbus will hold initiation events on June 28 with a 9:30 mass at St. Patrick's church. Initiatory work begins at 1 pm conferring all three degrees, followed by a banquet in St. Patrick's auditorium served by the Altar Society. The chamber of commerce board voted 100 dollars to finance the start of a museum foundation. The committee, chaired by Rev. Peter Spehr, plans to secure a log cabin for relics and locate the museum in the city park. Negotiations aim to obtain a fog house in the northwest county area for relocation to Sid.

Willis F. Beyer one month old son of Mr and Mrs Willis Beyer farmers living several miles northwest of Sidney died at home Tuesday morning after two days illness Funeral services were held from Gehrig funeral home Wednesday with Rev Anton Link Catholic officiating and burial in Catholic cemetery.
Chadron state teachers college professor Frank Brown filed a second nomination petition for Congress in Nebraska fifth district for the November 3 election. The petition was accepted by the secretary of state after his first petition was returned for an incorrect address.
Two thefts were reported in Sidney this week. A 1931 Chevrolet truck owned by Western Ice & Storage was taken by Albert Galke and later found abandoned near Fremont. A 1934 Plymouth sedan owned by William Johnson was stolen from the warehouse, found abandoned near Scottsbluff, with no suspects yet identified.
Ak-Sar-Ben dedicates the July 2 racing program to residents of western Nebraska from North Platte west. Ambassadors distribute complimentary tickets for the $1.10 admission, with only the 25 cent state and federal tax due. Three young birds believed to be bald eagles were captured at W. EB Allman Place west of Sidney on Monday evening. Adults circling overhead suggested eagles, and local amateurs call them bald eagles nearing extinction. Nest contained rabbit remains, feeding the brood well. William J. Brandert 85, father of William Brandert and Mrs. Otto Mueller of Sidney, died last Friday in a Fremont hospital from injuries in a fall. Funeral held Monday afternoon with Sidney attendees including Otto Mueller, Will Brandert, Gottfried Mueller, Elmer Muller, Ed Struckman, and Arnold Kahler. Brandert was a former resident of Cheyenne county and was well known locally.
A flight of 59 mile wide by 100 mile long Jesser migratory grasshoppers moved from western Kansas across eastern Nebraska on Wednesday. Farmers watched nervously as the cloud, described by Prof Myron H Swenk as resembling a sunlit fluff with beating wings, darkened the sky in parts, though reports of heavy landings were not yet received.
