Smithsonian Receives Major Canfield Mineral Collection
Washington The Frederick Canfield field collection of minerals, one of the nation’s largest private reserves, and a $50,000 endowment for its expansion, has been donated to the Smithsonian. Arrived in Washington after packing 8,000 to 9,000 specimens in 117 cases, unpacking and cataloguing will take months. The donor, Frederick Alexander Canfield of Ferro Monte on Minehill New Jersey, died last July after researching Americas mineral collections and selecting the Smithsonian as legatee. The collection has two sections. the older gathered by Canfield’s father before mid century includes Franklin furnace NJ specimens and other historic mines, while the latter, curated by Canfield himself, is world-spanning and highly unique, containing the type specimen of canfieldite and most known specimens of argyrodite. The Canfield family has NJ mining ties for over a century. the elder Canfield was heir to the Dickerson Sackasunny Mining company. Edu cated at Rutgers and Columbia, the younger Canfield profiled mining worldwide, including two years in Bolivia and the Cerro de Potosi fossil plant discovery. The Sidney Sales Barn sale on June 4 has been postponed to June 18. 74 and 76
