Commissioners set hearing date for county plan

The Cheyenne County Commissioners plan to set another hearing date for the comprehensive development plan and zoning regulations at Tuesday's 8 a.m. court-house meeting. County Clerk Bob Hossie said they will act on a recommendation approved by the planning commission tonight amid amendments to the proposed plan. They may also approve a $5,000 transfer from the general fund to the district court budget to cover expenses through June 30.

Supreme Court to review gas ruling sparks deregulation clash

The Supreme Court agreed to review a Federal Power Commission plan that would let natural gas producers shut off interstate gas supply when contracts expire. The Washington appeals court barred advance approval, a move opposed by 21 congressmen as a backdoor deregulation effort. Federal law requires prior approval before ending interstate sales.

Access road work starts near Sidney Interchange

Preliminary construction on the access road from the east Sidney Interchange to U S Highway 3 is underway east of the overpass. Grading and culvert installation on the 3.5 mile project are under contract to Platte Valley Construction Co. of Grand Island for 1.3 million dollars. Capital Bridge Co. of Lincoln is contracted to build two bridges on the route for nearly 600 thousand dollars.

Rough weather hits southeast Nebraska and massive Black Muslims assets

Rough weather struck southeastern Nebraska with downed trees and power lines near Milford and Pickrell amid widespread rain. No injuries were reported. Separately, Black Muslims leader disclosed assets of at least 46 million dollars, breaking decades of financial secrecy for the group as a new era begins.

Deadline for comment on water proposals extended

Nebraska Congresswoman Virginia Smith notes a 40 day extension for public input on Army Corps of Engineers water jurisdiction rules. Comments due by June 30 to DAEN-CWO-N in Washington. Also reports nearly 29 million of 458 million federal summer job funds for Nebraska, with Omaha, Lincoln and other communities receiving allocations. She cites ongoing MIAs accounting efforts and a push for a House select committee to investigate missing servicemen and recovery of remains.

Kiwanis Plan Raise 36 Star Flag at Ft Sidney Bicentennial

The Sidney Kiwanis Club with the Cheyenne County Historical Association and the Sidney Bicentennial Committee will raise a 36 star replica flag over the post commander’s home during a Fourth of July ceremony. The flag honors Ft Sidney founded in 1867, Nebraska’s statehood, and features stars rearranged by Mrs Gillis Sebold on a 50 star flag. Kiwanis president William Fankhauser announced approval in April. Ray Oliverius, Don Robinson, and Gillis Sebold lead the project.

Nebraska jobless rate falls from 5.7 to 4.7 percent as construction and agriculture hiring rise. statewide 34,870 unemployed in May, down from 41,358 in April. Omaha and Lincoln show notable declines with May unemployment at 6.5 and 4.9 percent respectively.

The new president of financially troubled American Beef Packers Inc may be an outsider. Bill Jones, spokesman for a court appointed creditors committee, said there are other primary concerns and noted conditions set by president Frank R. West when he offered to resign Friday.

Hearing on Cheyenne County development plan amendments

Planners set an 8pm hearing today in the basement court house meeting room to consider amendments to the Cheyenne County comprehensive development plan and to its zoning and subdivision regulations. Wheatbelt Public Power District proposes about 30 changes to the master plan. The plan was approved by the planners months ago at a public hearing but awaits commissioners approval.
