Sidney prepares for public Bicentennial events July 4

The Sidney Bicentennial Committee announces a morning July 4 program starting with a Youth Parade from city offices to the Post Commander’s home. A 36 star flag ceremony, pioneer cooking and crafts at Lodgepole Valley Youth Camp follow. Prizes in two divisions will be awarded, with costumes encouraged and a Liberty Bell replica ordered for Cheyenne County Fair. Deadline for Sentry blanks is June 27. next meeting June 21 at 9 am in the library.

Sidney Declared American Revolution Bicentennial Community

Sidney has been named an American Revolution Bicentennial Community by the Sidney Bicentennial Committee. Betty Tremain said a telegram from Third District Representative Virginia Smith conveyed Sidney's selection and congratulations. No date was given for an official Bicentennial flag presentation.

Youth Camp to aid Bicentennial festivity at Lodgepole Valley

The Youth Camp board plans pioneer skill booths for July 4 displays at the Lodgepole Valley. Builders bid on a new central camp building, eyed for groundbreaking with the Bicentennial events if bids fit a $30,000 target. Sidney City Council and Cheyenne County pledged $15,000 each, matching funds raised. Volunteers urged for painting and grounds work with two more work days set. Special Bicentennial representatives attended.

Wheatbelt opponents clash with Cheyenne planning panel

Wheatbelt Public Power District pressed 31 amendments to Cheyenne County zoning in a four hour hearing. Planners accepted some changes notably on utility by right in agriculture and signs, but rejected others such as removing county permit requirements for utility projects and burying lines in mobile home park rules. Dorwart Corcoran and Britzman urged underground utilities for aesthetics, while planners noted existing state review suffices and emphasized landowner coordination and potential variances. Public hearing on the plan set for July 1.

PRC Sets Annual Meeting With Local Government Panel

The Panhandle Resource Council will hold its annual meeting at 2 PM Thursday at the University of Nebraska Panhandle Station. An 11 county group will host a panel on strengthening and preserving local government with Don Blank McCook George Kleen Franklin Don Nelson Lincoln Ed Narjes Sidney and Stan Jucks moderating. The PRC includes 11 county commissioners 29 Panhandle municipalities and three Natural Resources Districts.

Parkland plat zoning map advances in Sidney plan

The Sidney Planning Commission approved the final Parkland Addition plat and waived the eight percent land set aside for parks, schools and recreation. The plan moves to City Council for approval. A zoning map for the 76 acre former railroad tract south of Legion Park is expected by July 30. The board weighed school capacity and precedent with past additions amid pressure to enforce the eight percent rule.

County transfers funds to district court budget

Cheyenne County commissioners approved a 5000 transfer from the general fund to the District Court budget by resolution to cover jury and witness fees and Court-appointed counsel costs through the fiscal year. Clerk Elva Davison cites higher juror fees as a factor. They also reviewed juvenile care bills with Welfare Director Virgil Knackstedt and allocated 2500 to the juvenile court budget. A 1:30 p.m. July 1 hearing date was set for the comprehensive development plan and zoning regulations.
