United Fund Sets Budget for Sidney Campaign

The Sidney United Fund approved a $15 000 budget for this fall s drive after a budget-setting meeting. The allocation includes $14 270 for 10 civic and charitable groups and $730 for drive expenses. Organizations approved include the King s Daughters Travelers Aid Tri County Association for Retarded Citizens USO Epsilon Sigma Alpha Muscular Dystrophy Fund Girl Scouts Scouts Salvation Army American Red Cross Boy Scouts and National Arthritis Foundation.

County plans hearing on amendments to Cheyenne plan

Cheyenne County plans a public hearing Monday at 8 p.m. in the courthouse basement meeting room to consider amendments to the comprehensive development plan and its zoning and subdivision regulations. Wheatbelt Public Power District seeks changes duplicating state permitting. Colorado planner Bob Britzman will attend to answer questions. The meeting is open to the public.

Suez Canal reopening cited as boon for U S hard red winter wheat

Neb Wheat Advisory Committee heard from Richard Benson of Great Plains Wheat in Beirut that opening the Suez Canal after eight years will cut Gulf shipping costs, boosting U S wheat competitiveness in Iran and the Persian Gulf. Benson noted Iran imports about two million tons yearly, with the US supplying about 90 percent. He cautioned hard red winter share may rise as costs fall.

Nebraska PSC fires chief engineer in Kennard case clash

The Nebraska Public Service Commission voted 3-1 to fire chief engineer Gerald Sasek amid a dispute over rate regulation in the Kennard case. Dog saves girl from rattlesnake bite on farm

A three year old Labrador-Vizsla cross dog named Billy Jack shielded 17 year old Cyndi Starr at the Vern Brauer farm on South Divide. The dog leapt between girl and snake and was bitten but survived after veterinary care. Mrs Brauer says the dog proved his value beyond companionship.

Thunderstorms Possible Across Nebraska Tonight

A low pressure system and cold front from Minnesota to Montana move into northeastern Nebraska bringing scattered thunderstorms. Severe storms possible in the southeast tonight with cooler temps overnight in the 50s to 60s and highs in the 80s on Saturday. State record high reached 85 at Beatrice, with 45 observed at North Platte early Friday.
