The State of Nebraska placed 2500 bullheads in City Park Lagoon this week, joining a prior 2500 fish. Kids quickly learn of the new haul as a young angler shows off his catch, while background youths fish in warming weather. The park remains a popular, active spot for youngsters despite a cool day.
The Weather Bureau says precipitation probability fell to ten percent in western Nebraska as a large trough of fair weather moves in, replacing a six week pattern of daily rain. Despite forecasts for a wet June, better weather is seen with intermittent showers. Farmers, hampered by a month in the fields, hope moisture is spread through summer as hail damage remains average and few crops have progressed. East Dalton and the Dix west area saw notable hail and wind, while overall countryside appears lush with intermittent lakes forming in low spots.
The Nancy Fawcett Memorial Library at Lodgepole is in use though finishing touches remain. Volunteers moved books from Lodgepole Elementary School and students helped shelve them. Adults listed include Mrs. Glen Fraass, Mrs. Arnold Kehl, James Sterling, Ernest Borm and Robert Davis. The library opened Tuesday and Thursday 2 to 5 pm and Saturday 9 to 11 am. second graders and up are invited to enroll in the Nebraska Centennial Summer Reading program. Formal dedication will follow.
Flyers interested in flying are invited to a meeting at the National Guard Armory next Wednesday night June 21 at eight o'clock sponsored by Overland Air Service and the FAA flight service. The session covers flying safety and techniques with FAA films and a Q and A. The FAA role for flyers will be explained. Ladies are urged to attend.
The Cheyenne County NFO will hold its first monthly meeting since chartering on Monday June 19 at 8 p.m. in the National Guard Armory. Members are asked to bring their wives and a non member.
The Sidney Juniors toppled the top rated Ponca City team 7 to 5 at home, avenging a prior defeat to Bartlesville. This bold upset follows chatter of Ponca City being unbeatable and marks a major early season move for Sidney.
Clayton Walker Jr., 35, waived a preliminary hearing in Cheyenne County court and his case moves to district court. He was to face charges of breaking and entering and carrying a concealed weapon, with the breaking charge reportedly dropped. Walker fled after displaying a gun at the Dalton trailer home. Police recovered about $20 and jewelry. He was arrested in an Alliance roadblock after being seen hitchhiking along Highway 385.
Sidney Chamber of Commerce manager Ed Cole says the town will see a flood of visitors from July through December 1967. Conventions, tournaments, and meetings plus the Centennial county fair in August could draw thousands, with the November music educators meeting attracting 2,500 to 3,500 and the broadcasters session adding about 125 visitors.
The largest earthen dam in Cheyenne County near Point of Rocks, built on Roy Nelson land with Nelson, Mrs. Anderson, Cheyenne County and Soil and Water Conservation District involvement, held back waters as spring rains began. Two Nebraska senators staged rapid moves in the Legislature over Sidney trade school funding, delaying debate until Monday as flood dogs the session.
Pan-American Petroleum Corp. reports a successful No. 35 Harrisburg Unit well NW of Sec. 4-18-55, about a quarter mile from the 1917 Kellys Corner drillsite in Banner County. The Harrisburg field yields from the Dakota sand. earlier crews stopped short. Weather delays hinder activity. other wildcat spots exist in Richardson and Gage counties with new tools en route.
Lloyd Carr of The Overland Air Service announced the addition of Don Kiel as instructor and charter pilot. Kiel, a three year Air Force veteran, holds a commercial pilot rating and is qualified in single and multi engine land aircraft. He will serve mainly in the Wyoming Nebraska region.
Vandals broke into the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints in eastern Sidney during the night Wednesday. Entry was gained by breaking a window and lighting paper to see inside. They damaged a door and blasted off a lock. sheriff Kermit Brumbaugh was notified Thursday noon.
The public is invited to an open house at Christ Episcopal Church located at 10th and Linden St. on Sunday from two to five PM. The 1886 historic church marks Nebraska’s and Sidney’s Centennial observances, inviting community members to view its history.

A University of Nebraska survey shows Sidney retail business up 13.6 percent in April from a year earlier and 13.6 percent above March. The report notes a 5 percent rise in overall business activity in April 1968 versus April 1967, with 22 Nebraska cities reporting and Sidney above the state average of 7.3 percent.
Marine Corporal James J. Davis aged 18 has been returned from Vietnam to Oakland Naval Hospital in California. He suffered head injuries in action and is reported in satisfactory condition.
