Demand for polio vaccine overwhelmed Sidney offices on Saturday as about 1,300 shots were given before serum ran out. Many waited in doors and outside, with some children receiving second or third doses. Doctors hope for continued turnout and a four shot plan through July.
Eighteen enlisted men and three officers of the 424th Ordnance Battalion returned to Nebraska after two weeks at Fort Carson Colorado. About 11,000 citizen soldiers took part in civilian component training. The Tri-County group including Kimball Deuel and Cheyenne counties led the 259th Ordnance Company in Hastings with Capt Norris Johnson and Lt Col Laurence Weigel among its officers.
Mary Collett, the window artist hired to paint Sidney storefronts with western scenes, was hospitalized in Denver last week and expected to start work in Sidney today or tomorrow. Epsilon Sigma Alpha sorority, which sold the window advertisements, was notified Saturday. Collett was to be released from a Denver hospital Sunday after treatment for injuries suffered while working there.
A 4-H Club sponsored puppet show at the City Auditorium on Wednesday evening June 24 at 8 pm aims to raise funds for the state 4-H camp at Halsey. Marge Kelly of television fame stages the show with her puppets for the public fundraiser.
The Sidney High band returned from the Rose Festival in Portland with top band honors in the Junior Rose Parade and led Saturday morning’s Rose Parade. Reporter coverage praised the group as the national crowd favorite, with extensive publicity for Sidney. Band director George Hinn credited the team’s efforts and Chamber of Commerce support for the acclaim. The group’s schedule included parades, a beach visit, a rainout concert, and celebrations upon arrival home to Sidney.
Mrs. Mary Catherine Reker 67 died in her sleep at 1228 Sixth Ave Sidney from a heart attack. Rosary services precede funeral at St Patrick's Church with burial at Greenwood Cemetery. Survived by husband Martin, four children, siblings and five grandchildren. Funeral home Gehrig and Son in charge.
Rodeo stock for Fort Sidney Days Rodeo arrives in Sidney and is on display at the Saddle Club grounds in South Sidney. NSRA approved rodeos run at 1:30 Saturday and Sunday at the Cheyenne County Fairgrounds. Stock provided by Bill OConor & Sons. Hadley Barrett to announce. Events include Brahma pull dogging calf roping saddle bronc riding Brahma bull riding and bareback.
Dick Smith of Sidney led the Drive It Yourself contest with 34.8 mpg earning 25 dollars. Oliver Brunz of Sidney took second with 34.5 mpg earning 15 dollars. William Schulz of Sidney won third with 34 mpg earning 10 dollars. All contestants drove a 1959 Chevrolet Biscayne six cylinder in road tests.
Sheriff W. W. Schulz stopped by the jail at 7:30 p.m. and found three inmates attempting to spring a door. Three men, William Torrez Grady Lewis Lawrence and Harold G Russell, face charges amid seven inmates in custody.
Two 16 year old Gurley youths escaped serious injury when the car driven by Melvin K. Kurth failed to make a curve on a county road and overturned in a ditch. Kurth was uninjured and passenger LaVon Rohde had minor bruises. Damage was about $500. The accident occurred two miles south and six and three quarter miles east of Gurley.
Local elevator sources quote the price of wheat at 1.52 dollars per bushel. This follows market activity across the grain trade with prices monitored by regional elevators.
Two discovery wells in southwestern Cheyenne County are now in production. The No. 1 Hendriks yields about 150 barrels of oil per day, the No. R. Hawkins about 80 barrels daily. Ohio Oil Co. Sidney District holds interest in both wells and farmed out the Hawkins to Kinney Coastal Oil Co. The article notes additional drilling is expected after production records are reviewed and lists two more Cheyenne County drilling sites filed over the weekend as part of eleven western Nebraska sites.
Herb Aldrich owner of the Western Auto Store has been named chairman of the annual Street Sale here Saturday July 11. The sale has grown in popularity since its introduction four years ago with more merchants taking part each year.
Western Nebraska farmers count days to harvest as winter wheat heads out across the Panhandle. Rain is scarce but hail losses are limited. forecasts suggest cooler, wetter weather may arrive later, aiding yields though total output may fall short of 1958’s record. Custom cutters move north, storage capacity expands amid expectations of a large yield.
