County Assessor Joe Ruttner released 1959 schedules showing Cheyenne County total actual value climbing to $133,958,845 from $131,539,324. Real estate, personal and business property all rose. intangible assets and bank deposits increased, while vehicles and grain tax also edged higher.
Rinehart's Oil Reporting Service lists nearly one hundred drilling sites in Kimball and Banner counties, the largest in the Denver Julesburg Basin's decade long history. Miami Petroleum Co leads with seven new wells and two field producers in Kimball and Banner, including notable discoveries at the Young No 1 and other fields.
Bishop Paschang will officiate the Dalton cornerstone ceremonies Sunday at 2 p.m. in the new Catholic church. Clergy from St. Marys and St. Patricks Sidney attend with Monsignors Hayden Siudowski and Father Kremeier. open house to follow. The building, started in 1908, is stone and Norman brick, seating 216 with a 35 member choir.
U S Savings Bonds prove popular as Sioux Ordnance Depot ends drive. Eight payroll deductions added, bringing subscribers to 544 or 67 percent of the workforce. William Schulz led solicitors with 34 new subscribers.
Fire ripped through Dutch’s Bodyshop in Ogallala destroying a 70 by 100 foot wood and tin building and contents. Damage was estimated up to 70000 dollars. Rex Searles owned the building and firemen removed several new cars from the scene. Cause not immediately determined.
Two Sidney cars were involved in a collision at Fort Morgan Tuesday. Leonard Moseman, a TV repairman, remains hospitalized with neck injuries expected to require months to heal, though he may be released this weekend with a neck brace. Eric Brauer, driver of the other car, had slight injuries and was not hospitalized. Both vehicles suffered extensive damage as Moseman’s car was pushed about 90 feet across the intersection.
Harold G. Russell, 23, Worland, Wyoming, pled guilty in Cheyenne County Court and was bound over to District Court on a forgery charge.
Cheyenne County Certified Seed Growers Association schedules a field meeting for Friday morning June 19. Ivan Liljegren says Chet Swinbank will show wheat variety identification by head and beard traits. Dean Lancaster outlines field isolation and weed and disease tolerance standards. The event starts at 10 a.m. at the Lyle Miller 4-H Bison wheat project, two miles north and three east of Huntsman, with visits to additional seed fields. Public attendance urged.
Warren S. Frank L. Rezanina 62, a lifelong Sidney area resident and retired farmer and county road maintainer, died in Memorial Hospital after a monthlong stay. Funeral services are Tuesday at St. Patrick’s Church with burial in Greenwood Cemetery. He is survived by his wife Leona, four children, eight grandchildren, and several siblings.
Fort Sidney Days kicks off with a Flag Day tribute at 7:30 p.m. by Sidney Lodge No 1894 Elks at the band shell. Exalted Ruler F W Pivonka invites public to fly the flag on June 14 and join the observance on June 19 honoring the 48 star flag with a Lodge drill and BPOE involvement.
Eight persons accused in a teenage party faced in Cheyenne County Court had charges dismissed on May 8. Three were cleared of procuring liquor for minors and five of possessing liquor as minors. Names cited include Jim D. Rodgers Gary Wright Darwin Glassburn Dianna Zimmerman Stan Talcott Carol Bodtke Jeannette Raddatz and Linda Burke.
Wheatbelt Public Power District Manager Charles Ham reports House Appropriations Committee cut 277000 for the Nebraska segment of the Kortes Cheyenne Pinebluffs Sidney line, amid a misunderstanding of the line’s purpose. He cites Bureau of Reclamation plans and urges Senate reversal with support from Rep Don McGinley and Senators Hruska and Curtis.
The Sidney high school band winds up its Rose Festival run in Portland with praise for performances in the Rose Parade. They also featured at Hillsboro’s Strawberry Festival and toured the Centennial grounds and the International Trade Exposition with 23 foreign nations exhibiting.
In March 1875 rumors claim James Butler Wild Bill Hickok killed three men in a Sidney saloon. The supposed victims include Big Jack, linked to Buffalo Curley, and Jack McCall, later known for killing Hickok in Deadwood. Doc Carver memoirs are cited as possibly detailing the event.
The price for wheat was quoted today at 1.54 dollars per bushel by local elevator sources.
The Legislature advanced salaries for county judges, boosting Cheyenne County Judge C.W. Smith’s pay by 720 to 3,600 a year. The measure LB4 raises most county judges but excludes Douglas and Lancaster, where increases were already approved. About 200 of the raise will go to the retirement fund beginning in 1961.
