Nebraska’s 1966 4-H enrollment rose by nearly 6,000 to 38,571 youths, with 81,326 projects started and 87.8 percent completed. Although memberships grew, the number of clubs dropped across 41 counties, while urban counties like Douglas and Lancaster led with large member totals.
Zeezo the Clown will perform at the Safeway in Sidney at 19-30 Illinois from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday June 15. The Denver area entertainer known as Larry Campbell will offer tricks free balloons autographed photos and rides in a Model T as part of a summer Safeway tour across 60 cities in six states.
North Platte hosts a Spring Crops Field Day at the University of Nebraska North Platte Station on Wednesday June 14 at 7 p.m. CDT. Dr Virgil A Johnson will report on wheat after May freezes and on hybrid wheat development. Attendees can view experimental hybrids from Scout Gage Bison Omaha and compare with recommended varieties. The event includes the winter wheat nursery from Turkey to current varieties and advancing lines. Supt Leslie F Sheffield notes progress in dryland farming to boost yields and reduce wind and water erosion.
Lincoln reports rainfall may replenish Nebraska groundwater only in fractions of an inch. University of Nebraska Extension specialist Dean Axthelm cautions topsoil moisture and irrigation pumping determine recharge. He notes domestic and livestock wells have little effect, while extensive irrigation can lower water tables. Alliance area may see deeper pumping.
