Sidney seeks state help to share highway maintenance costs

City officials back a plan to shift U S Highway 30 maintenance from Sidney to the state for ten years. City Manager Coffey cites 17 to 27 years of city upkeep and notes state participation in earlier paving districts while detailing ongoing discussions with the Department of Roads and a need for a written agreement.

Chappell and Sidney Youths Shine in State Driving Road-E-O

In Hastings the State Jaycee Teen-Age Safe Driving Road-E-O saw Chappell youths take high placings. Bryan Bruns finished second, Jerome Riewe placed in the top seven, while Warren Rodgers of Wayne won with 449 points. The event drew 31 contestants, including one girl from Nebraska City, amid wet and skill driving tests.

Ryboldt Wins Caricature Grand Prize in Contest

Bob Rybolt won the grand prize in Greenlees' cartoon contest for ages five to fourteen. He earns a $100 merchandise prize plus $5 for first in the 11 to 12 bracket. Lanier Bound Over On Second Degree Charge

Austin Lanier, about 65, charged with the murder of Oliver Ivory, 31, in a Sidney rooming house. May 29, Tuesday waived reading of the complaint in County Court and was bound over to District Court for trial. He was arraigned on a second degree murder charge. A first degree murder charge remains on file.

Turkish Farm Expert Tours Wheat Fields

Dr. Fethi Acil of Ankara College of Agriculture toured Cheyenne County wheat fields in Nebraska, noting Turkey grows more wheat than any other food crop and detailing differences in farming, exports, and farm equipment. He praised American students and described Turkey’s farming system, acreage, and tractor count while on a three month U S farming tour.

Members of the VFW urged Sidney business houses and residences to display the flag on Flag Day June 15 and July 4. Flag Day falls on Monday since June 14 is Sunday, while July 4 lands on a Saturday, highlighting patriotism and loyalty through display.

Oil Output In Nebraska Rises To New Peak

Herrington Criticizes Nebraska Tax Mess At Chamber Meeting

State Tax Commissioner Fred Herrington denounced Nebraska tax laws and blamed citizens for not informing legislators. Hill City Fife and Drum Corps to Parade in Sidney

Hill City Fife and Drum Corps will take part in the Fort Sidney Days parade on Saturday June 20 marking their second Sidney appearance since 1949. Other bands listed include Julesburg American Legion Drum and Bugle Corps Sidney High Marching Band and bands from Potter and Gering. Parade entries must be filed by participants.

Fort Sidney Days to award $50 costume prizes

Costume prizes totaling fifty dollars will be awarded next week for the best costumes at Fort Sidney Days. Les Ham says no costume rentals in Sidney this year due to the Centennial in Colorado, residents to supply their own outfits. Judging coincides with board judging on Friday with twenty dollar top prizes for best dressed man and woman and five dollars for second place.

VFW and Auxiliary Bid for State Convention at Hastings

Eight Sidney members form the Sidney delegation to the Nebraska VFW encampment in Hastings from Saturday to Tuesday to bid for the state Mid Winter conference in Sidney. The group also campaigns for Tom Lenzen for state junior vice commander. Delegates include Lloyd Adams Lenzen Neal Craig Jim Paxton Bill Hawkins. Commander Dale Bowman of Plattsmouth presides. National guests include Ted Connell and Lt Gen William H Arnold. The event features parades, a marble tournament, banquet, memorial service, and elections.

Minor Found Innocent in Sidney Alcohol Charge

An all male County Court jury Wednesday morning found Karen Hansen not guilty of possession of alcoholic beverages by a minor. The charge stemmed from a party held in Sidney on May 8.

Council Accepts Bid for Sewer and Permits

The City Council approved three building permits and accepted a $1,690 zone bid from Filsinger Excavating Co. of Sidney for the South 11th Ave sewer project. Permits included a $2,000 residence remodel for Lloyd Lockwood at 1130 Linden, a $300 garage extension for Carl Olson at 1735 Newton, and John Deere Co. sign removal and replacement at 812 13th Ave.
