Wheat is heading in Cheyenne County with lush stalks and waist high growth. Moisture improves Nebraska forecasts but late rain or hail risk remains, while national outlook lowers the federally controlled crop to 970 million bushels versus last year.
Elton Berck president of the Nebraska Farmers Union warns that defeating the June 20 wheat referendum could drive prices to the lowest level since the Great Depression. He cites a possible $1 per bushel free market price and argues a yes vote could add at least 75 cents per bushel, helping farmers limit losses and protect rural prosperity.
Nebraska 4-H members and leaders announce two conservation camps to be held at Chadron and Ponca State Parks this summer. Camp slots are limited to 200 at Chadron and 158 at Ponca for youths aged 14 and older.
Scouts and Explorer Scouts gather at the Wye Braska Area Council Camp at Little America and Laramie Peak to prep for summer operations led by director Richard L. Knudsen. Senior staff includes W P Ricketts Donald Haush Alton Zimmerman John Christofer Vergal Winn Charles Stiles and Larry Hulbert with junior staff members David Tarpley Willard Rusch John Peterson John Helzer Bill Nigro Harold Piper and Quinn Rueben assisting.
The International Parks Highway Assn. wrapped its Alliance convention with a 3 point state level action plan to push for federal designation of a route from the Mexican border to the Dakotas. Officers were reelected and discussed seeking hearings, paving, and a single or multi state route number 851.
Union Pacific conductor R. F. Hunt reported his billfold containing seven dollars stolen from his rented room in Sidney. Shortly after, he phoned police again to say he found the billfold beneath a hall rug with the money missing.
Cheyenne County shows a small decline in overall personal property valuation as 647 fewer schedules are filed. Total personal property value drops from 3 666 375 to 3 640 745 dollars while business declarations rise, aided by Justin Haynes Co. Local assessor Roy Gish notes unreported lease improvements and Sidney sees a gain in value despite fewer schedules.
Sidney city crews and Charles Green plan to drive two 20 foot casings 36 inches in diameter into the Trognitz Spring on the Albin Olson farm to restore a flowing stream along Lodge pole Creek. The goal is to overcome the raised creek bottom and feed the park lagoon, preventing stagnant pools and mosquito risk this summer. Green arrived in Sidney to supervise, with a special bucket and gear being prepared for the one day operation.

Lawrence Theis of Lodgepole won the nomination for Washington County attorney on the Federal ticket at the Nebraska Boys State in Lincoln. Other county youths failed to secure nominations. Tom Rogers of Sidney targeted lieutenant governor, Larry Rohde of Gurley sought Federal secretary of state, and Jim Coulter of Potter aimed for Federal state treasurer.
May saw higher demand and supply for labor in four southern Nebraska counties per the Sidney Nebraska State Employment Service report. Total contacts reached 1,350 with 454 women and 163 veterans. 110 were referred to local jobs including 39 farm positions. Seventeen farm placements came via volunteer farm representatives from Big Springs, Chappell, Dalton, Lodgepole, Potter, Kimball, and Bushnell.
The Union Pacific Railroad appointed A. F. Whitmire as freight agent and D. E. Weimer as ticket agent. Whitmire, formerly a ticket agent, succeeds the late E. S. Stokes who died suddenly last week. Both appointees are longtime Union Pacific veterans.
Friday is Flag Day nationwide. Charles Colling, chairman of the Flag Committee of the Sidney Veterans of Foreign Wars, asks all businesses and homes in the area to display the national emblem. Flags should be raised in the morning and lowered at sunset following proper etiquette.
Baumgartner Oil Co plans production casing today on Rangers No 1 in Cheyenne County to connect Juells and Gaylord Fields. A 14 ft stain at 5,285 to 5,289 ft and 18 in more stain at 5,304 to 5,? ft were found in a sand core, sandstone tight. Logs and possible tubing, tests pending. Ohio Oil Co perforating Chambers No 1, Grabill Field swab tomorrow. Boulder No 1 in Kimball County reports 5,870 ft oil from a 7,148 to 7,153 ft STT after two hours.
The Sidney City Council, in a routine session, considered making Country Club Drive and 23rd Avenue through streets with traffic management. City Manager Murrey Fuller proposed yield signs and was authorized to research their local use. Paving District No 81 for Quincey Street was approved. E Y Grape was hired as district engineer. Bids on District No 82 from 13th to 15th Avenue will wait until approval. A central scheduling body for Legion Park baseball diamond use was endorsed to resolve league scheduling issues.
State tax Commissioner Fred Herrington announced motor vehicle valuations adopted by the State Board of Equalization. He said it is impossible to predict whether the new schedule will raise or lower overall vehicle values in 1958, noting that increases and decreases vary by model and depend on quantities sold.
Fort Sidney Days events move toward final stages with a Saturday rodeo at Lodgepole Valley Saddle Club grounds and a Sunday golf tournament at the country club. The parade features Miss Cheyenne Frontier Days 1957 and seven bands. Prizes total 500 across historical, humorous and religious categories.

Cheyenne County Agent Ivan Liljegren warns lawns have not had heavy rain for three weeks and urges watering. He advises a good soaking every other day for new lawns to keep them healthy during the dry period.
The Cheyenne County Historical Museum in the M. W. Osborn Building will implement new security procedures next week. A paid supervisor will oversee all exhibits, roped-off displays will prevent handling, glass-topped cases will house items, and special police checks will occur nightly. Museum officials urge timely loan submissions before opening next Monday.
