Carolyn McGirr won the Miss Universe Nebraska girls contest in McCook and will represent Nebraska at the finals in Long Beach California. Sidney’s Reba Kinne finished second in Miss Nebraska at Lincoln and had earlier won Miss Ft Sidney honors. Both are Sidney High School graduates known for scholarship, music, and extracurriculars.

New monthly rates outline higher charges for business and residential lines in Sidney. One party business moves to 10.50 dollars, residential four party to 3.15, with two party and farm options adjusted. Rates exclude federal tax.

Motorist Fined for DUI With License Lifted

Vincent Ely of Sidney was fined 160 dollars and costs in Cheyenne County Court after pleading guilty to operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcoholic liquor. County Judge C W Smith suspended his license for six months. Ely was arrested at 11 25 p m Friday by the Nebraska Safety Patrol on Highway 19 two miles north of Gurley.

Cheyenne County Driver Tests Scheduled Through December

Driver license examinations in Cheyenne County will be held at the courthouse in Sidney, averaging two days per month for the next six months. The schedule lists July 10 and 24, August 7 and 21, September 4 and 18, October 2 16 and 30, November 13 and 27, and December 11 all day.

President Eisenhower Ill Within Day After Illness

President Eisenhower was stricken about 10 pm and came down with an upset stomach. Three examining physicians reported no indication the illness is related to his 1955 heart attack or last year's issues and said he is progressing satisfactorily.

Wilson's Office Acknowledges Data On Depot

The Office of Defense Secretary Charles Wilson acknowledged a letter from Rep. A L Miller seeking a modernized mission for Sioux Ordnance Depot in Sidney Nebraska. Oj Co adds Chambers No 4 in Grabill Field nine miles southwest of Sidney. From 4880 to 4900 feet the D sand test flowed oil within 90 minutes with a gas gauge of 99 000 cubic feet per day. Chambers No 4 lies five feet lower than Grabill discovery and production casing will be run.

Big League Tryouts Open Here Wednesday

High school and college age players from several states travel to Sidney for the first annual Cincinnati Red Legs tryout camp. The three day session at Legion Park runs Wednesday through Friday with an all-star game to cap events. A banquet, tickets sold by the Kiwanis Club, and park improvements including a new eight foot outfield fence and concrete dugouts accompany the camp.

Ralph E Clark of the American Association of Railroads told the Trans Missouri Kansas shippers board that by May 15 the eight southwestern roads had 6 000 more plain boxcars than last year and by May 25 there were 6 547 boxcars conditioned for grain loading awaiting the new harvest A concerted effort in April aimed to return boxcars to southwestern lines to prepare them for grain loading.

Thompson Rites Slated Thursday

Private funeral services will be held at 10:30 am Thursday at Gehrig & Son Funeral Home for Ray Oscar Thompson 35. He died Saturday morning from drinking carbolic acid swallowed in his hotel room after buying the fluid earlier that day at a local drug store. No inquest is planned. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery. He was born January 23 1922 in Burknett Texas. He lived around Graham Texas. He married Betty Walker January 6 1956 in Rapid City South Dakota. Survivors include his wife two stepchildren a brother and two step-brothers. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Gurley Summer Band Program Announces Registration and Schedule

Gurley school opens registration for a summer band program at 12 30 p m Wednesday June 12 for beginners and regular members. Director is Tom Gilliland. Four band meetings occur before Ft Sidney Days on June 12 14 19 and 21 at 7 30 p m. Beginning band meets at 6 30 p m on June 14 and 21. Regular band meets weekly on Wednesdays at 7 30 p m thereafter. Beginning band baton twirlers and sections meet Friday evenings at 7 30 p m.

Daltonite Dies In Car Crash Near Cameron Missouri

A Dalton woman Donna Della Wheeler 20 was killed in a one car crash on U S Highway 26 four miles west of Cameron Missouri. Her husband Marvin Dean Wheeler 23 the driver Arvin Kurth 18 of Dalton and Ian Kepler 16 of Broadwater were injured and taken to Cameron hospital. The Missouri Highway Patrol said Wheeler slept at the wheel causing the crash into a bridge.

State highway bids reveal 37 projects totaling 183 miles

The Nebraska State Highway department announced low bidders for June road contracts totaling 6,652,783.98 across 37 projects amounting to 183.2 miles. Includes first interstate segment Gretna to near 6.4 miles at 2,019,160.05, about 14 percent below estimate with gravel, surfacing, culverts and other items in Sheridan, Kimball, Box Butte and Garden counties.
