Frances Craig reports a front end collision where a van veered into the north ditch, rolled onto its side and caught fire. The driver, found alive, died minutes later after being pulled from beneath the burning wreckage despite fighting equipment.
A severe collision on the highway leaves two drivers dead as a green Plymouth and a van crash. The car is mangled beyond recognition, engine in the ditch, flames and scattered parts across the roadside. Volunteers assist for hours as authorities tally a grim year-to-date death toll in the region.
County Judge Robert A. Barlow of Cheyenne County died at 69 after weeks of failing health from heart trouble. Funeral at St. Patrick’s Church Monday at nine, burial in Sidney Cemetery. Survived by wife Grace Hart Barlow, four children, six grandchildren, two sisters, one brother. Appointive successor to be named by county commissioners until the next election for a short term. He began a new four year term last January.
The Sidney Municipal Band directed by Dean Killton starts its seven Friday night summer concerts at the Band Shell with a kickoff under warm weather and community anticipation.

Deep Rock Oil and Sloss weigh ongoing drilling up to fifteen wells if production holds. Ohio Oil reports Preble No 3 at 137 barrels per day, while Peterson No 1Wycol shows potential in Wyoming.
Parade Line Up for Sidney Deys parade on Saturday June 20 with floats arranged by sections. Floats must register by Monday evening June 15 at First Baptist Church corner 17th and Jackson Street. Floats arrive at 8:03 p m at Robinsons headquarters to receive official parade formation.
County property owners are told to ignore recent postcards about valuation increases. A new schedule, announced yesterday, will be much lower than the original. The board had planned hikes of 180 percent for rural property and 200 percent in towns, but those were indicated to be reduced.

Miss Wanda Westerhoff of Sidney is crowned Nebraska Lions Queen at the State Lions Convention in Fremont for 1953. She is 18, chosen for school, church, community and grace. Sidney Lions Club wins District 38 NI top honors and a set of International flags while district honors lead statewide. Delegates include Henn Spearow, George Kolzow, Wayne Ayres, Bob Clark, L. L. Lockwood, Willard Meyers and Arnold Westerhoff.
Albert J. Kinnersley 74 long time Cheyenne County attorney died suddenly at home Monday. Funeral at 2 p.m. Friday in Church of the Nazarene conducted by Rev. C. B. Johnson. Burial Greenwood Cemetery under Gehrig Funeral Home direction. Pallbearers listed: Willis, W. W. Schultz, Al Marsh, Virgil Greever, H. W. Minnall, William Koehn.
A veteran wheat grower notes recent rains measured up to four inches across some locales providing needed moisture to push the crop through spring. He warns the only worry remains hail and its potential to damage grain from now until harvest, as storms loom in the next month.
Reports indicate Kansas Oklahoma and Texas harvests are underway with Nebraska as a bright spot in the wheat belt. If June temperatures stay normal harvest could start by July 4 with peak activity by July 15 and most done by July 25. Weather will drive progress. ten dry days could finish Panhandle south fringe harvest.
