Panama Isthmus Oil Pipeline Links Oceans at Last
The Union Oil pipeline across the Isthmus of Panama connected Pacific and Atlantic waters with sea water testing at 800 pounds per square inch. Construction began April 1906 and finished October 16 1906 with full use by November 14 1907. The line runs 48 miles along the Panama railroad, holds 16000 barrels, and uses seven storage tanks in the Canal Zone. Oil from Santa Barbara county California powers the line and saves fuel costs for the Isthmian Canal commission.
