Sidney High Band Sent Off by Thousands to Portland

A crowd of over five thousand gathered at the Union Pacific depot Sunday evening to bid farewell to the Sidney High band en route to the Portland Rose Festival in Oregon. The group totaled 169 travelers including 103 band members and 66 adults, with four special railroad cars. Among those present were band director George Hinn, Superintendent O J Weymouth, and Mayor Ferris Preble. Loading began about 5 40 p m and the Portland Rose pulled away at 6 10 p m.

Western Nebraska Joins Nuclear Missile Network Expansion

The Air Force announced a broader Titan and Atlas missile system, extending to the Kimball area in western Nebraska and surrounding regions. New sites include Fort Collins Greeley near Cheyenne and towns east of Cheyenne. Overall, nine additional locations boost a 19-site network with underground and surface launch options.

Beverly Kicken of Ellsworth Nebraska was named Rodeo Queen at the Potter Rodeo's final performance. Attendants were Elaine Berges and Georgia Debus. The event drew a record crowd thanks to ideal weather and a lineup featuring Dick Stull Don Fedder son Benny Reynolds and more.

Charges Dropped In May 8 Party Case In Sidney

Judy Shoopman and Judy Hyatt of Sidney had their charges of minor in possession dropped in Cheyenne County Court. Alice Rodgers was found not guilty of procuring liquor for a minor from the same party. Her husband faces similar charges still pending.

Girl 10 Breaks Arm In Fall While Playing

Carol Bailey of Sidney injured her arm while playing Sunday. The 10 year old daughter of Mr and Mrs J Jo Bailey was swinging on ropes near a creek when she fell and is in good condition Monday.

Sidney Records State's Lowest Temps Amid Warm Weekend

Sidney logged the state's low readings with 59 degrees in the early morning and 53 degrees Saturday, while Scotts Bluff recorded 96. By Sunday the mercury rose to 91 with warm winds driving temperature swings.

Services Held For Victim Of Shooting Here

Funeral services were held at Gehrig and Son Funeral Home for Oliver Ivory, 31, who died from gunshot wounds suffered Friday May 29. Cheyenne County authorities hold Austin Lanier about 65 in connection with the shooting. no hearing date has been set. The inquest was canceled. Ivory’s sister and mother from Los Angeles, a daughter 12, a wife and son in Texarkana, and another sister survive. Ivory, born August 26, 1927 in Hooks, Texas, worked on construction in Sidney about four months, previously lived in Oklahoma City. Burial followed at Greenwood Cemetery.

Aerial Campaign Against Grasshopper Outbreak Begins

Northwest Cheyenne County farmers launch an aerial spray on about 15 sections to halt a severe grasshopper outbreak spotted last Thursday. At a Don Erickson farm meeting, 20 farmers approved the plan. ground crews continue spraying where not in the aerial program while two planes operate the northwest.

Survey Finds Few Grasshoppers in Nebraska Rangeland

Entomologist Clifford Wallstrom reported an initial survey shows very few grasshoppers in western Nebraska rangeland. State officials will tour Cheyenne County the week of June 15 to assess need for a range spraying program. Ranchers seek inclusion of about 96 000 acres in a federal state hopper control plan. County Agent Ivan Liljegren will invite interested parties and local control committee members to join the inspection team.

Kimball man breaks arm in oil field accident

A 21 year old Kimball oil field worker Jimmy Dale Clifton suffered a broken arm in an oil field accident near Kimball on Monday morning. He was taken to Sidney Memorial Hospital where a local physician treated him. Doctors described the arm as broken in several places.
