Eight die on Nebraska highways over weekend
Eight persons died in weekend traffic accidents across Nebraska raising the 1975 toll to 130, with victims from Omaha, Santee, and Lincoln. A Columbus woman, Carol Brant, 22, died when her westbound car struck a concrete bridge abutment on the Santee Indian Reservation. Her husband Marian and passenger Edward Taylor of Santee were hospitalized. An Omaha youth, Mike Nielson, 17, died after a car crash following a high speed chase. driver Timothy Ragan, 18, survived. A Lincoln couple, Steven Neuharth, 23, and Sharilyn Neuharth, 20, on vacation from their honeymoon, were killed when a gravel truck struck their car at Highway 61 and Interstate 80 near Ogallala. Peterson, the truck driver, was uninjured.

Shortfall in Handicapped Education Funds Alarms Nebraska
Lincoln AP Department of Education officials told the state Board of Education that funds appropriated for special education of handicapped children will fall about 17 million dollars short of the amount needed. Officials Gary Sherman and Larry Wentz said the state cannot pay its full share of programs run by local districts unless additional legislative funding is provided. Bellevue Senator Frank Lewis, chair of the education committee, said the gap could be covered by a January appropriation, while the committee will monitor progress and may modify the program next year. Lewis noted possible federal involvement if problems persist.

Hail damages wheat around Dalton and Broadwater

Skies stayed heavy over Nebraska with rain persisting after weekend showers. A trough from a weak low pressure system stretched from east central Nebraska to western South Dakota, bringing possible showers through tonight as the low moves toward central Iowa by Tuesday. Lowland flooding followed downpours with Kearney at three inches and North Platte over two inches. Norfolk had .14 inches in eight minutes. Overnight temps tonight expected in the 40s to 50s, daytime highs mainly in the 60s, with Tuesday clearing and readings around 60 in the northwest and low 70s in the southeast. The highest Sunday was 80 in Omaha and a 41-degree low was reported at Sidney.

Thieves at the High Plains Agricultural Lab last month may have stolen equipment but left the rainfall data intact.
