A heavy rain in Sidney and surrounding county soaked the parched ground, delivering over an inch in Sidney and varying amounts countywide. The brief downpour, though rapid, contributed moisture to winter wheat and other crops, signaling improved prospects for the area’s grasses and fields.
Anxious Nebraska farmers welcomed a soaking rain with a forecast of more around mid June while dry, windy periods raise concerns for wheat. A late hail event near Sioux Ordnance Depot reminded growers of approaching hail season as Cheyenne County steadies after a storm and tornado sightings were reported but unverified. Crops face stress from early dryness, but corn and sorghums gain ground as pastures improve and alfalfa yields run below normal due to cold snaps and rainfall gaps.
Territory reports pea aphids damaged alfalfa and red clover while wild hay prospects improve. Nebraska April meat production rose 12 percent from last year, the largest since 1946. Four months into the year cattle slaughter up 28 percent, calves 23 percent, sheep and lambs 20 percent, hogs down 14 percent, with April cattle slaughter 42 percent above last year.
University of Nebraska plant pathologists Dr Michael G Bousalis and Dr William Allington will visit Western Nebraska June 9 to 12 to study hail damage and its soil effects in Cheyenne and Kimball counties. They will inspect about twenty fields on fifteen farms, checking for root and crown rot while collecting data on cultivation and planting. Farmers with non hailed stunted wheat from before the last three years are asked to submit samples to the extension office for evaluation.
May 1953 proved cool and dry across the Nebraska Panhandle with Sidney at about 71 percent of normal rainfall and Chadron Alliance Scottsbluff below average. Temperatures dipped to near freezing several nights, yet mild winds reduced frost damage while crops showed strong early growth despite wind erosion and unusually dry soil.
The 521st Air Force band from Francis E Warren AFB will join Fort Sidney Days events with a parade on June 20 and a concert. The 33 member unit, led by Warrant Officer John Nagleski, has a long history from Geiger Field and now Warren, providing military music for base and community functions.
A lightning strike at 7 10 PM during a Monday storm destroyed a 51 year old barn on the Fred Reker farm in South Divide. Fire crews from Sidney Peetz and Crook, aided by favorable winds and nearby water, saved other buildings. Neighbors stayed through the night as the last embers were extinguished Tuesday night. One hay bale, buried under stone, was the only item saved.
James G. Paliatseas, 62, janitor at the Sioux Ord nance Depot, was found dead at work Tuesday afternoon. Officials believe a heart attack two hours prior caused his death. He lived in Bridgeport twelve years and was a WWI veteran, Greek Orthodox member, and never married. Funeral at Greek Orthodox Church of Bayard with burial at Oregon Trail Memorial Cemetery. Born October 26, 1893 in Xehore Laconia Greece. Immigrated to the United States about 1912 and naturalized in 1918.
Police report two accidents with light to moderate damage. At 2 38 Monday at 11th and Hickory streets Rolland Crow 33 of Alliance drove a 1949 Chevrolet and Car E Weaver 32 of Sidney drove a 1932 Ford truck. wind blew a car top onto Crow’s left front fender. A 1953 Oldsmobile with 700 miles, driven by Mrs Mary F Carney, collided with a 1946 Ford at 6 40 Saturday at 14th and Linden. Oldsmobile front end damaged about 421.
The Rural Fire District No. 3 meeting scheduled for June 10 at the Lodgepole Legion Hall has been postponed to Thursday June 11 at eight o clock.
Preble's Red and White Super Market at 14th and Jackson set to open Friday with a grand opening next week. Built by Robert Clark, the 66 by 132 foot store offers 6000 square feet of selling space, parking for 50 cars, modern display islands, four checkout stands, and extensive refrigerated sections including 30 feet of self service meat cases and a large frozen foods area. Local trades and suppliers contributed to the project including Lawrence Brackstenback general contracting and Sidney Ideal Stone, Oldenburg Refrigeration, Panhandie Paint & Glass, and Thomas Lumber Co among others.
The Fort Sidney Days celebration committee urges residents to wear old fashioned clothing reflecting the era of Fort Sidney. Participation is encouraged to enrich Western Nebraska’s standout event and is described as affordable and easy for all.
Logan County and Sterling authorities combined to arrest Robert C. Valondry on a no account check charge from May 9 against the First National Bank of Rapid City. Valondry waived extradition and appeared June 2 in county court, bound over to district court on a $1500 bond. Separately, William Dryden, an oil company worker, was arrested for nonpayment of child support in Fort Morgan Colorado after Colorado authorities followed leads to his residence and vehicle in Salina Kansas.
The famous stage coach on exhibit at Burlington station Lincoln will join the Fort Sidney Days parade. Burlington notified L. E. Wamsley that the railroad will transport the coach at its own expense. The coach imitates those used on the Sidney Deadwood run in the gold rush era and will also be displayed prominently for education of visitors.
Emergency call urges Sidney businessmen to enter any float ideas as seven floats are listed so far. Bands from Sidney High, Sidney Junior, Fort Francis E Warren Cheyenne, Sterling, Bayard, Rushville and McCook may participate along with antique vehicles. A concert series at each corner is considered if float numbers don’t rise.
A May report from Francis Hiner of the Nebraska State Employment Service outlines near balance in most occupations for Sidney, with shortages in agriculture and sales. Nonresident workers fill many daily openings. May saw 57 unfilled jobs versus 411 a year earlier, 1,140 visitors, 107 women, 165 veterans, 216 referrals, and 179 hires across four counties.
J. McGowan is the new manager of the meat department at O. P. Skaggs Market Store. He arrives from Hastings where he led Food Center, Inc. since 1947 and has twenty seven years in market operation. His wife and two sons accompany him.
Multiple district court actions are filed. Nebraska Machinery Company seeks $10,082 from Gene Simpson for unpaid equipment bought August 30 1952 valued at $12,000 with one payment made. Kimball resident Charles E. Franklin sues Frank Cervik and Joe Schwartz for $419.90 for surveying work in 1949. Raymond O Dell sues Horn Motor Company for $2,950 citing failure to repair a Ford two and a half ton truck under a 30 day guarantee and resale at diminished value. Page Eight.
Wheat Belt Electric Membership Association board directs REA cooperative activities across the region. W Lee Hawkins of Peei joins the board for the coming year while local REA directors and officers are reelected. The pictured board includes Hawkins Zimmerman Weed Spiker Bond Hornicek Patrick Peeks Ham Konkel. Nelson absent.
Rapidly shaping field at Doran Farms Inc four of six wells yield oil and two are gasers. Doran No 5 tests gas at seven to eight million cubic feet daily while No 6 reports oil recovery past 2 800 feet. Wells lie about a mile apart forming a gas oil bearing structure extending east to west across the section. Chicago Corp and Republic Natural Gas operate the lease on farmout from Ohio Oil Co and seven more drilling locations have been staked.
The Telegraph notes more oil news appears on Page Five Section One with emphasis on up to date regional developments. It cautions that company spokesmen may be unavailable or policies may bar progress bulletins in some cases.
Two drilling rigs operated by Delaware Drilling Co. test a north south structure in the Preble Field as Ohio Oil Co. completes Bond No. 3 for oil production. Logs show D at 4425 and J at 4482 feet with total depth 4530 and plugged back 4511. Top producer anticipated while No. 1 Hill at West Sidney yields gas from a drill stem test. No. 3 Preble pumped forty barrels in six hours. No. 4 awaits pumping unit. Rex Monahan’s Kimball county well drills at 5900 feet.
J & S Liquor Store completed its move to 2130 West Illinois in the Loch building in Sidney this week. Owners Pete Sittner and Dude Jelinek plan a formal opening soon for the package store joining the West Illinois shopping district.
Leo Gorman is named assistant postmaster in Sidney and will assume duties immediately, as announced by Postmaster Donald R. Shipman this week.
