Nebraska Guardsmen head to summer camps in multiple states

Members of the Nebraska National Guard begin two week summer training camps across several states. About 500 guardsmen from western Nebraska stay at Camp Guernsey in Wyoming and return June 15. The Sidney unit left for Guernsey Saturday. The Lincoln Medical Ambulance Company trains at Camp Ripley, Minnesota, returning this weekend. An armored division from southeastern Nebraska travels to Fort Carson, Colorado on July 19. A northeastern battalion heads to Camp Ripley in late August, returning in early September.

Permits Down During May in Sidney Construction

Building permits in Sidney totaled 51000 for May, down from 81000 a year earlier. Most projects were remodeling and repair, with a 27600 cold storage building at state highway department property making up over half the total. Through May, permits reached 231000 versus 396000 in 1974.

County plan sent back to commission

County Commissioners sent Wheatbelt’s proposed County Comprehensive Plan and Zoning and Subdivision district plan back for around 30 changes. Planning Commission must hold a new public hearing on June 16 and the County on June 17, with Bob Britzrman available to answer questions. Additional funding allocations and contracts were approved, and veteran service candidates were interviewed for an upcoming appointment.

Parkland Addition Plan Gets Preliminary OK in Sidney

The Sidney Planning Commission reorganized and gave preliminary approval to the Parkland Addition plan south of Legion Park. John Egging was elected chairman with Guy F. Bush as vice chairman. New members Gene Lienemann R C Cunningham Al Lukesh Carl Johnson joined the board, replacing Carl Olson and John Echternach. Parkland Development owns the property, bought from Upland Industries, a Union Pacific subsidiary. A zoning map for the addition with residential and commercial areas is to be proposed later this month.

Cheyenne County officials are shown a land use inventory map prepared by the USDA Rural Development Board chaired by Ken Sakurada. The map inventories current agricultural, community facility, road, rural housing, and farmstead uses and offers a broad brush appraisal of changes since data collection.

Historical group to take renovation bids for Officers Quarters

At the Cheyenne County Historical Society monthly meeting bids for the Officers Quarters renovation were discussed. Formal bids will be submitted next week and the Restoration Committee may accept one not exceeding 4223 dollars. The project must start soon to meet a Nebraska Historical Society grant deadline of July 1.

Lodgepole seeks state grant for town pool complex

Lodgepole Nebraska 410 residents have half the funds for a heated Olympic sized pool and recreation center planned with outdoor courts and winter skating potential. The town seeks a 25 000 state grant matching the 15 000 raised with a 50 000 federal gift contingent on approval within a week.

Oktoberfest meeting planned in Cheyenne County

The Cheyenne County Chamber of Commerce will host a meeting at 7:45 PM in the City Council Chambers to discuss an October Oktoberfest celebration highlighting Southern Panhandle ethnic heritage with costumes music dancing and ethnic foods. The board also approved backing Ad Color Press Des Moines to create a 24 page color promotional book about Sidney and Cheyenne County printed 5500 copies with 500 for advertisers and 5000 for chamber use.

Wheat crop outlook improves after rains praise from grain cooperatives

Ervin Wheeler of Potter Co-op Grain Co and Hart Quinn of Lodgepole report rains saved the wheat crop with fields looking good north of town and Gurley showing better than last year. Harvest poised between July 15 and 20 as farmers brace for potential lower prices while cautioning against weed sprays before the soft dough stage.
