Cheyenne County Commissioners will hear Wheatbelt Public Power Districts bid to modify about 30 items in the zoning and subdivision plan. If approved, construction permits for every power line could be removed and building permit coverage redefined.
The National Hail Research Experiment will not seed clouds this summer at field operations in northeastern Colorado and southwestern Nebraska. Manager Rob Robinson announced the Sydney Municipal Pool opens Tuesday with hours from 1 30 to 7 pm. Admission is 25 cents for children through 12 50 cents for youths through 18 and one dollar for adults Adults-only swimming runs 12 30 to 1 30 pm Monday to Friday next week rate 50 cents A schedule for swimming and lifesaving instruction will be announced later.
Douglas Sarpy Dodge and Washington counties likely face the 2.5 mill maximum tax next year for technical community college support while other areas may pay less. Senator Maurice Kremer of Aurora, sponsor of LB 344 moving control to local boards and enabling the levy, plans to ask five of six boards to hold the levy to two mills. Metropolitan Technical Community College in Omaha appears to be the sole district needing the maximum revenue. Boards must set their levies by August.
Lt Gov Gerald Whelan said he would be surprised if Gov. Exon seeks the Democratic nomination for the US Senate next year. He noted Exon plans to serve out his current term and that they share identical political views through 1974. Whelan also backs higher pay for state senators and partisan elections, and forecasts tax changes including a 2 percent sales tax and a 12 percent income tax of the federal obligation.
Independent Cable Inc officials estimated up to 3900 people attended the open house and plant dedication on Saturday. Dignitaries included State Treasurer Frank Marsh and UNL athletic director Bob Devaney as ICI President Hal Prouty and plant manager Roger Price led the cable cutting ceremony.
Mary Beth Grange reports on stray dogs as a growing municipal burden. In Sidney, Palmer Rhoades runs animal control, boarding strays at Edward Veterinary Hospital for three days before euthanasia if unclaimed, with about half of 20 monthly pickups adopted or taken in. Crowding costs include hospital bills, salaries, and vehicle upkeep, while fines cover only a portion of expenses. Local residents urge action such as subsidized spaying and venturing clinics, noting dumping on farms and roads. National figures show millions of dogs without homes and costly control programs.
The Associated Press reports Nebraska will enjoy clear to partly cloudy skies with a dry westerly flow from a high pressure dome over Kansas. Tonight a weak southerly breeze returns as the high shifts east, bringing a slight chance of thundershowers late tonight or early Tuesday in central and eastern areas. A Pacific cold front heads east but won’t reach the Panhandle until Tuesday morning.
Zumberge outlined western Nebraska choice of Scottsbluff McCook and Chadron for chataquas to overcome regionalism plus Hastings Norfolk and Nebraska City as hosts. He said Omaha and Lincoln were excluded due to routine access to university programs and noted a May chancellor search should produce four to six candidates by October with a board-reviewed final pick. Warner saw no active Panhandle station expansion plans though more vigorous programs may occur without duplicating Chadron State College or Nebraska Western offerings.
Steve Cook, new director, lists registration from 8 am to 5 pm on Tuesday at City offices and Thursday at the Legion Park Shelter House. Courses include golf archery tennis volleyball and more for children and adults with no fee and begin the third week of June through the first week of August.
